Tush Push

Ok, lot of great minds out there so lets have at it. How do the Chiefs stop the tush push. My thinking is to line 2 interior linemen on each side of the center. Right behind them with a slight angle to the center are 2 more big body linemen. All eyes are watching the ball. As soon as it starts moving, the 2 columns push forward. The behind linemen pushing the forward linemen. The ends seal the edge while line backers, corners and safeties watch for a pass.

If it's such an unfair play, why the **** aren't the other 31 teams running it?

He's almost certainly thinking of the special teams rule. There's no rule defensive players can't push each other.

This is untrue. It's only a penalty to push a teammate into the offensive formation when they are set up to kick or punt.

Stink says it is.

So I would tell you, if you lined up on the defensive side of the ball with linebackers sitting behind defensive tackles and linebackers shoving defensive tackles through the line of scrimmage, I think that’s illegal. You can’t do it. So why is it okay for the offensive side of the ball to be able to do that, but the defensive or special team side of the ball you can’t do it?”

Hey ChatGPT - In the NFL, is it legal for defensive players to bunch up and push each other forward to drive back the offensive line and stuff a runner?

Response:

Quote:
No, it is not legal in the NFL for defensive players to bunch up and push each other forward to drive back the offensive line and stuff a runner.

According to NFL Rule 9, Section 1, Article 3(b)(2), defensive players (Team B) are prohibited from pushing teammates on the line of scrimmage into the offensive formation. Violating this rule results in a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness.

This rule was implemented in 2013 to enhance player safety, particularly during field goal and extra point attempts. The NFL Competition Committee observed that defensive players pushing teammates into the offensive line created excessive force, leading to increased injury risks for offensive linemen.

While this rule specifically addresses special teams situations, the overarching principle of preventing players from pushing teammates into the offensive formation applies broadly to maintain player safety across all plays.

In summary, defensive players are not permitted to push each other forward to penetrate the offensive line, as it violates NFL rules designed to protect player safety.

Don’t know why other teams don’t do it. Just give the defense the same opportunity to push themselves into the line as well.

So it's illegal on special teams but legal for the rest of the game? That's stupid.

Think it is a very fine line, I have never seen it called in a Tush Push, QB sneak... at some point the intent is not pushing the Defensive player into the formation but rather stopping the offense from going forward in a pile.
