The Netflix Favre Doc is out

They really don't hold back all that much, they have people from every level of his career back to high school talking about what a pile of shit the guy was...

This kinda reminds me a bit of the George W. Bush days.

"He's a dumb hick that doesn't know how to tie his own shoes!!!"

"He masterminded the greatest coverup in US history while simultaneously playing 5D chess to push us towards war to benefit his Defense and Energy buddies!!!!"

I mean I think Favre is a moron who understands football. That's where I started. I think the league has had a fair number of stupid people who see the game incredibly well somehow.

But those guys probably can't balance a checkbook and they sweat when they read.

I think it's probably more likely than not that Brett Favre was someone's useful idiot. What better sort than a celebrity who's certainly not known as an intellectually curious sort.

Might he need to face some retribution for being THAT gullible? Sure - probably. But am I going to jump all the way to him being a mastermind of some multi-tier welfare fraud scheme? Or even having more than a passing understanding that something along those lines might even exist? Nah.

If you want to call that willful ignorance and castigate him for it -- I get it. It's perhaps a fair conclusion. I just can't get all the way to malicious.

I worked with a college football team.

Some of the brightest football minds, guys who would understand concepts immediately, often struggled remembering anything in the classroom. Some of it was interest but most of it revolved around how they learned. They were doers not readers.

This thread is why I avoid knowing about player's personal lives as much as possible. Or actors or whoever. All I ever needed to know about my team and its players has always been centered exclusively around what they did on the field. just easier that way.

Oh I don't think there's any question that he's not gonna go to jail over it. They didn't even bother charging him when they nailed some other guy's ass to the wall (gave him like 30 years, IIRC).

But I think it's fair to create a distinction between what can be proven in court and what we think might've actually happened here in determining how much we individually are willing to hold that behavior against him.

So I don't mind the speculation much. It's a worthwhile conversation to have.

Though I do take some umbrage with the inflating of the damages -- he was at least tangentially involved in a scheme that defrauded MS of $70 million. That's MUCH different than "he defrauded MS of $70 million". It would appear he had no knowledge of any 'big picture' stuff and, at worst, may have knowingly been involved in about 10% of the total amount. So I'd tap the brakes on some of that rhetoric.

I'll also recognize the absurdity of tagging 'only' onto "6-8 million of taxpayer money..."

But when a slew of folks went to jail over it and Favre wasn't even charged, that means something. And when he was pursued civilly (which can be done without proving any sort of malicious or fraudulent intent) it certainly suggests that MS isn't just protecting a favorite son.

So I think there's a lot less substance to some of this than has been suggested.

That's where I get to 'willfully ignorant'

I think that call can establish that he knew SOMETHING was odd. But not exactly what or how odd it was. Or how broad.

And if anything it would also suggest a fairly large amount of ignorance as to the mechanics of the 'machine' writ large.

He's a lot more involved than you think as well.
$5 million went to building the new volleyball complex at Southern Miss directly, not to Favre, while his daughter was playing there at the request of Favre to New. 1.1m went to Favre directly to make speeches on concussions and CTE, etc. Another, 1.7m went to Prevacus, the drug company Favre owns with Jacob VanLandingham, but VanLandingham used that money personally.

Favre returned his 1.1m without interest. Everyone in connection has been charged with fraud except for... Favre. All of that 8 or so million was directly per Favre's involvement. That's a lot to claim innocence against.

Here’s an example of a slippery slope in action. Guy absolutely worships one grifter and now he’s licking the boot of every grifter. Is it projection? Do you wanna get in on the grift action or have you already?
