In that GIF I see Sean Smith playing his coverage perfectly, the safety got burned he was playing the inside and that was a beautifully thrown ball and an excellent catch.

meh, shit happens when you let guys get a free release. Safety had over coverage, bit on play fake. That was the safety's play to make. Good play by Smith to not pass him off when he saw the safety out of position.

It looks like a seam route on a cover 4 to me. Hard to tell without seeing the whole field.
