Earl Thomas Trade Rumors: Seahawks Safety 'Drawing Interest,' No Deal Imminent

The Seattle Seahawks are receiving trade interest in safety Earl Thomas, but there's "nothing imminent" regarding a deal for the three-time All-Pro, Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson reported Monday.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider told reporters*Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine the team is "just open to anything" regarding a possible trade for Thomas or another of Seattle's veteran defenders.

Robinson included defensive end Michael Bennett as a player the Seahawks could potentially trade and speculated Seattle may be looking to acquire a second or third-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft. After selecting 18th in the first round, the Seahawks' next pick comes in the fourth round at 120th overall.

While Thomas is coming off another Pro Bowl season, he's a natural candidate for the Seahawks to consider moving this offseason.

He's in the final year of his contract, and re-signing him next offseason won't be easy for Seattle, especially since the team will want to keep as much financial flexibility as possible for Russell Wilson's extension. Wilson's contract expires after the 2019 season.

Trading Thomas would also create some cap space this offseason. By executing the move before June 1, the Seahawks would save $8.5 million against $1.9 million in dead cap money, per*Over the Cap. That's not insignificant for a team with just*$13.4 million*in projected cap space.

Since he continues to play at a high level, the Seahawks would be in a strong negotiating position. Thomas finished 2017 with 88 combined tackles and two interceptions. It seems reasonable to expect Seattle could get back a second-round pick—and possibly more.

I almost put him in one of my offseason plans. He's built alot like Quinton Dial, who I've had in my plans. Long guy with size and the ability to plug the middle.

Rams are tagging Watkins or Joyner.

Zero chance that the Chiefs sign Robinson and it would be a terrible move IMO.

You spend big on defense, get a reasonably priced FA WR, maybe a guard but not sure.

You have to remember that you will have to resign Hill, Jones and Fuller, etc in two years.

To pretend that WR isn’t a serious potential need is flat out wrong.

Just imagine our group if Tyreek can’t play for a game. Yuck.

I get it, Mahomes probably would make those players look better than they are, but why make things harder than they need to be? We need to be helping Mahomes grow, surrounding him with good pieces.

You saw what happened once Kelce got hurt. Now, Mahomes starting is different but still the need is there

Nobody really even knows how much of a need WR really is. They have a lot of options available on the roster already and not a ton to go off of, since they played a QB that generally hated WR's for 5 years.

People who actually get upset at the notion of us going after a WR just baffle me. We clearly need a fourth offensive weapon not only to give Pat more options, but for cover should any of the other top guys have to miss games.

True. Im one of the Chiefs fans that dont think WR is a huge need compared to other needs especially, but that's if we resign Wilson.

I don't think we do though. I think Wilson goes elsewhere. I like Robinson, Chesson, Conley...But Conley's coming off an Achilles in the middle of the season and we just don't know enough about D-Rob & Chesson.

Tyreek & Kelce have been durable, but they're bound to miss some games eventually. And if Tyreek especially is out for an extended period of time, I wouldn't feel comfortable with just Conley, Robinson, Chesson and ?

Veach even mentioned going after WRs, so yeah, I'm thinking we bring in a guy or two now.
