I should also say nowadays I do a lot of run-walk-run, the Galloway approach. I typically do 2-minute runs and 30-second walk cycles for most easy runs, long runs, and my last 3 marathons. If I have a tempo run on Wednesday, instead of tempo intervals, I usually run those continuously, but otherwise I take the walk breaks. They are great for injury prevention and endurance prolongation.

I am pretty confident that you could run a marathon if you can devote the time for the training. You seem to enjoy running and for someone working from a solid base of, say, 15 to 25 miles a week, you could easily get ready for a marathon in 3 to 6 months, using plans such as those from Hal Higdon, Jeff Galloway, or Greg McMillan. Training for one’s first marathon is special, because there are so many weeks when you set a PR for distance, and you also realize that if you can get up to around 20 miles in a training run, you absolutely can finish 26.2 with tapered legs and the energy and support a good marathon provides.
https://lukehumphreyrunning.com/hmmc...alculator.php?

I've used this calculator before and it usually does a good job of predicting race times for my 5k based on my mile time. This says that my marathon pace would be 8:39 minute miles. That is close to my tempo training 3 mile pace day. There is absolutely no way I could run 26 miles at that pace let alone a half marathon. The longest Ive ever ran was 10 miles and it was all easy except the final mile.

I would have to run extremely slow to even think about finishing.

Working out mid-afternoon in Scottsdale, the only annoyance was the 90 year old seniors with 10 pounds on the leg extension machine, just sort of going through the motions for 15 minutes.

No idea how people can stand working out at the gym when it’s packed. And forget waking up at 4 am. I invested in home gym stuff years ago and it’s just so much better. Sure, a few things are missing but I’m not training to reach natural limits here and I don’t have male body dysmorphia.

Man, they give you plenty of time to finish the marathon! You’d be surprised how a little training can help you run longer at close to your current tempo pace, and even if you did the distance at what would be a very relaxed pace for you, you would still have fun and be solidly in the middle of the field. It’s worth thinking about, for sure. I am positive you could finish!

I've been doing CrossFit for 9 years now, with lapses here and there and a couple of breaks that I blame on COVID. I don't think I could ever go back to just walking into a gym and navigating various machines, crowded or not. What's weird is I don't think it would really work to build out a home gym, either. At this point I kinda need the community and support of suffering with others. When my kids were still in the house I did early mornings because evenings were full. Now that they are both in college I love doing the evening classes as a way to decompress from the day. A lot better for me than grabbing a beer out of the fridge, too.

I did home workout stuff for a while before wanting more machines and stuff than I could fit in the space at home, and I kind of feel the same way now about needing to go to the gym... I just feel more locked into what I'm doing, and oddly enough despite other people being around, I feel more so in my own little world with headphones on and tuning out everything/everyone else.

A big part of it is getting out of the house after working from home all day, and I think just separating out that time and place helps me focus on the one reason I'm there.

And the only thing my gym is really lacking IMO is another preacher curl machine or two... that's the one machine I have to keep an eye on if it's not open when I first get there. I'll sometimes see a couple people taking one machine for a while or whatever, but 99% of the time it doesn't throw off what I'm doing.

Long time ago now I used to work from 6-2 and going at 2:30 pm was the best. Early enough to avoid the evening crowd and get a workout done in peace and also still have a huge chunk of the afternoon available.

On my last race before the shutdown in 2020, I ran (I think) a 2:36, which was my worst time ever. For this upcoming race, I'm expecting to be slightly under 3 hours, and my dream goal is to beat 2:45. Yes, my aspirational goal is to have a worse time than my previous worst time. So not fast, but as explained below, I'm old now.

I'm reporting back on this, but only because I'm happy about it.

I'm back in the half-marathon game! I ran my race today, and I did much better than I was expecting, finishing in 2:31:09. I was running at a blistering* 10:42 pace until Mile 11, when I ran out of gas and had to walk a bit. I finished at an 11:32 pace, which is a long way from my record but still a huge victory for me.

The course was mostly downhill, which helped, but it was also wicked warm. I like running races in the high 40s or low 50s, and we were in the mid 70s for much of the race.

Are you planning on doing more half marathons this year?

I don't have any planned at the moment, but now that I've got momentum I may have to find some.

I need to knock out the final eight states so I can say I've done a race in all 50, but they're generally inconvenient to travel to, and I'm a little exhausted on travel at the moment. When I get home in July, I will have been gone for roughly 15 of the first 27 weeks of the year.
