ESPN: Ranking the AFCW Defensive Backs

Looks like Bill Williamson likes Eric Berry & thinks the Oakland backs will suck without Nnamdi. Same for Denver if they lose the ancient old aged Champ. Seems to like Sandy Eggo:

1. Nnamdi Asomugha, Oakland: This may change. Many league observers expect Asomugha to leave the Raiders when free agency starts. That would be a major hit to this list.

2. Champ Bailey, Denver: Bailey is aging, but he is still an elite-level player.

3. Eric Berry, Kansas City: Berry could be atop this list next year. The second-year safety appears to be a special player.

4. Quentin Jammer, San Diego: The veteran cornerback is underrated. He is a stalwart.

5. Brandon Flowers, Kansas City: He is a favorite of NFL scouts. He is becoming one of the better young cornerbacks in the league.

6. Eric Weddle, San Diego: He is a top safety and a playmaker.

7. Stanford Routt, Oakland: This is a big year for Routt, who just signed a big contract with the Raiders. He’ll be challenged if Asomugha leaves.

8. Antoine Cason, San Diego: Cason is an up-and-coming player. He was very solid is his first season as a starter last year.

9. Brandon Carr, Kansas City: Carr is a strong right cornerback. He and Flowers make a nice tandem.

10. Bob Sanders, San Diego: The new Charger has to show he can stay healthy. If so, he’ll be a great pickup.

11. Tyvon Branch, Oakland: Branch is a good, strong player, but he still has to improve.

12. Michael Huff, Oakland:
Huff is decent, not great. He could leave in free agency.

13. Andre Goodman, Denver:
He is nearing the end of his career, but he’ll probably start in 2011.

14. Brian Dawkins, Denver: This could be his final season.

15. Steve Gregory, San Diego: He is a solid role player.

16. Kendrick Lewis, Kansas City: Lewis and Berry could be a pair for years.

17. Chris Johnson, Oakland: He could start if Asomugha leaves and the youngsters aren’t ready.

18. Javier Arenas, Kansas City: He could be a good nickel for the long term.

19. Mike Mitchell, Oakland: It’s time for this 2009 second-round pick to make a move.

20. Rahim Moore, Denver: I have a feeling this second-round pick will be ranked much higher next year.

There were no good teams in the AFCW last year. Did you watch the playoff game?
I'm not dragging anyone down to anyone else's level. Varying degrees of bad are still all bad.
I understand you may not be able to be objective about this and I understand. This is, after all, a KC board.

The first goal of every year is to win your division and make the playoffs. We did that.

We missed the next couple goals by a landslide, but... we were a bad team for quite a while... Sure, we are still climbing out, but it was nice to at least see the sunlight again.

Noone's happy with the result of last year, but taken with the backdrop of the previous five years, it showed things are moving up. Also, the way it was done.. with mostly a very young talented team was encouraging.

Yep. KC showed a lot of potential last year, as did Oakland. Can't wait to see how this year's draft picks pan out for all teams.
If the Raiders manage to solve their QB issue before KC it could be good for the crypt keeper's team.

No good teams in the AFC West? What about the team from the AFC West that went 8-2 against non-AFC West teams?

In this situation, I would have to say that better than bad does not equal good.

You are offering the schedule as a sign of strength? Did you see the SOS last year? Did you see the playoff game?
Your standards are your own.
KC is definetely showing signs of promise.
Again, I am respectful of the fact that this is a KC board. I'm not trolling, just offering my own opinion.

If we go 8-2 against non-AFC West teams THIS YEAR, I will be more impressed.

But, really, we need to play better against the big physical teams that we had problems with, like Oakland and Baltimore. We need help in the middle of our O-Line and the middle of our D-Line. Hopefully this draft improved us enough in that respect.

And we need to cover the damn shallow crossing patterns better. Grrr...

Tebow could gut it out all he wants at FB & the Denver fans wouldn't have to keep trying to convince the rest of us that he will eventually learn actual QB mechanics. Denver missed the #1 pick by one (1) spot - thats gonna come back to hurt them like missing the #1 pick (Jamarcus) came back to hurt Oakland. Its a tough thing to be so bad & then miss out on the only reward for it.

Hell no on Cam Newton. I don't want his kind on my team no matter what.
Period, no question. Much happier with the way things are now.

I have the highest respect for Berry and his talents. Barring injuries, by week 17 he will likely be viewed as the best safety in the league. But, you can't deny that Bob Sanders has been a great safety in the 5 NFL games he's played.
The Chargers system should keep him fresh since there isn't as big a difference in the role of FS compared to SS. In other words, he won't be called upon to make the bone crushing tackles he's been known for in the running game as often.
I'm fairly confident that his big F.U. to the Colts brass will be successful in his new environment.

You don't need guys like Cam on your team. They only bring you down. Remember how much better you got after jettisoning Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler and Tony Scheffler?
