He'll have a very successful career using it as a plan A so it's not like it's a bad thing.

In watching the game yesterday, I had goosebumps thinking about how good he'll be. But I also got to thinking about Andy's best 2 QBS - Favre and McNabb - and how much Mahomes resembles them in so many ways. Both of them tough as nails but they got the bejesus knocked out of them in their careers.
Your point is not a bad one. Something similar happened at Tech. He was forced to play as a true freshman when Davis Webb got hurt. It turned out that Mahomes' freestyle ability was very helpful on a team with a shitty offensive line. By the time Webb got healthy, he had lost the starting job.

But I believe Pat's incredible success as a true freshman stunted his growth. Kliff could never get him to stay in the pocket, not even after 3 years of telling him over and over to stay in the pocket. Hopefully the Chiefs staff will have more success with Pat in this regard.

On Mahomes scramble he had 2 receivers open. However he did escape and he almost scored a td
So do we count this as a hidden touchdown for future discussions like we do with Smith?

I hope so too. The great news is Big Ben and McNabb had outstanding careers freelancing and Mahomes can be a better freelancer than both those guys. It's hard to stop something that in both cases brought their teams a ton of postseason success. Both guys refused to stop freelancing until their bodies forced them to so I don't think we can underestimate how difficult a thing that will be to coach. Nor would I want to coach it out of him entirely. Just enough that he's not getting knocked out of games.

Those guys would have been tackled at the 10 the result of the play he got us to the 2ydl so it was a more positive gain than if he threw the ball to them he made a second choice and went with it. I go for results on that play.

The @Chiefs offense is clicking early in the preseason. And guess what? They are taking shots down the field.

Was pleasantly surprised at just how mobile he is. I knew he had some semblance of running ability but he looked pretty dangerous out there in that regard.

If he tried to throw the ball there it would have been a possible strip sack.

Love how the Cincy announcer stated the following when Mahomes was playing, "Everything KC calls is working."

Yeah, it sure is nice to have a Qb make throws under heavy pressure and move the chains.

To Zilla's point once he faces the 1's defense throwing all kinds of different looks at him it will be another level of a learning curve for him, but what I like the most is he attempts to make something happen if it is there. He is fearless to make a play and like someone said earlier it is just getting better at knowing when you actually can pull it off vs when to dial it back because he has nothing. And so far he hasn't gone full Brett Favre which is good and I'm sure Andy learned his lesson about reigning in an extremely raw talent much earlier than later dealing with Favre and what he is doing with Pat and at the same time allowing Pat to be Pat not squelching him so that he can make those difficult plays because he has that physical ability.

Teaching that delicate balance of when and when not to make a play based on physical and mental ability and it only gets better.

Pen I have nothing against you man and you are a good dude, but seriously and mean this seriously, although PM2 is very raw right now he is learning and performing at breakneck speed with AR's playbook right now. What the coaching staff were caught off guard with to some degree is how quick this kid is picking up the playbook and reading defenses. Right now where PM2 is at and I am dead serious if I had my choice to start AS vs PM2 against the Steelers in that playoff game last year it is a no-brainer. Our defense played well enough to win and we needed playmaking from the QB and didn't get it. Where PM2 is right now and as raw as he is he still would have given us a much better chance to win that game IMHO. This kid is that talented and I am just as impressed with his intellect, work ethic, integrity, and love for the game as I am with his physical ability.

This could be a very important game because it might be the game Mahomes realized that his freelancing could work in the NFL. What if in 2 years he keeps moving to advanced algebra and starts to believe he has no need to learn calculus?
If only Favre could have stayed healthy and strung together some starts he would have been a hall of famer.
