Here's my grumpy old man rant. You know how it's becoming cool to have these videos about how much fun we are having at home, or to see into where people live. Like with the draft, how that was supposedly a good thing, or comedians hosting shows from home. Ok, there was some novelty for a couple weeks, but enough, all this video shit just doubles down on screen time and is not cute or fun (as I type into my screen)

The entertainment business has been very interested in Premium Video on Demand for quite some time and with the success of Trolls 2 and movies that were previously scheduled to sell at venues like SXSW, some of which are going straight to Amazon, movie theaters just won't have a sustainable business for much longer.

I'm sure that Mom & Pop and Fine Arts theaters will exist and there will probably be a few theaters left for massive blockbusters and IMAX. But the days of 16+ Multiplexes were dwindling before COVID-19 and with AMC filing Chapter 11, we're sure to see less movie theaters in the coming years.

The virus sped up the inevitible.

Supposed to be dead before. they survived TV, then cable and finally streaming. But, I agree, I think covid-19 will be the final nail in the coffin.

yeah, we got a real shitty stadium about 5 minutes from me. At least it’s a dome with air con. Players will like the nearby beach though.

How are you going to have fans in July? Sucks for me personally. My Cardinals haven’t played in St. Pete in 6-7 years. Had tickets for all the games.

Disagree on movie theater chains disappearing. Research shows a resurgence over the last decade. Theater audiences were larger in 2019 than they were in 2004. A recent national survey showed theaters were one of the “top three” most-missed things about the regular world since COVID. AMC stock has surged since the announcements of loosening guidelines.

There’s an Americana to the movie theater that you can’t get at home. Regardless of how nice your setup is. That, and there’s no sign that Hollywood would ever consider discontinuing theater as their main source of income. I don’t care how much they made releasing shows on Apple TV during COVID, it will absolutely pale in comparison to the box office numbers they would’ve generated otherwise.

The theater is a captive audience. Yours for 2-3 hours. To target a home crowd you’re fighting too many distractions. Kids, cell phones, dinner prep, etc. it’s messy.

The mainstream has been trying to bury movie theaters for about 40 years now.

It isn’t happening.

Theater chains were already struggling and now that the studios have accelerated their plans, the industry has no choice but to contract.
