Tush Push

Ok, lot of great minds out there so lets have at it. How do the Chiefs stop the tush push. My thinking is to line 2 interior linemen on each side of the center. Right behind them with a slight angle to the center are 2 more big body linemen. All eyes are watching the ball. As soon as it starts moving, the 2 columns push forward. The behind linemen pushing the forward linemen. The ends seal the edge while line backers, corners and safeties watch for a pass.

I chose to look at the NFL Rulebook, specifically, I referred to Rules 9 and 12, for any potential additional guidance, and Rule 19 Penalty Summary.

Rule 9 Article 3 Items 1 and 2 talk about pushing another player into the formation on a scrimmage kick

Rule 12 Section 3 Article 1 is very detailed on other actions, such as using a teammate to gain height (leverage)

Nowhere does it actually appear in the NFL Rulebook.

I think it should just go back to being an unassisted runner. There’s no fair way to call forward progress as many have said allowing the offense several opportunities. When a half yard direct snap run play doesn’t have the whistle called for 8+ seconds something is funny.

I have more of an issue with their linemen diving at defensive players knees than the actual pushing of the runner. If they keep doing that, it doesn't matter if someone is behind and pushing him, they'll still get a bunch of yards on a normal sneak and it can **** up defender's knees.

I think this whole thing could've been solved with far less of a circus if the original proposal wasn't overtly directed at one specific play that was merely a symptom of a larger rule about aiding ball carriers. Instead of a discussion about a rule, it became a debate fueled by…

I never understood why they don't just go back to banning pushing a runner like the old rule.

Counter that by instructing the DL to dive at the knees of the OL. Forget stopping the ball, a few ruptured knee ligaments for starting offensive linemen will make using the Tush Push less appealing.

Start blitzing a DB off the edge and having him dive into the pile at the QB’s knees to chop
him down.

Will end appeal of the play the first time a QB or up back breaks a leg because they’re at the edge of the scrum and exposed to

And for the Chiefs, run a tush push with Gray as the QB, that feature the option to pitch the ball to Mahomes rolling out to one side of the formation and looking to hit a big play.

Shoot, even run a good old fashioned speed option off of it.

Why would you want it banned? If it's so unfair and such an advantage, other teams should do it. And if that renders 3rd and 4th and shorts obsolete, then it can be banned. But 1 team running a successful play? Makes no sense to ban it. It's like if they would have banned the wildcat after Miami's 2008 season just because they were so dominant with it.
