The "I just got back from the gym" and this is what I have eaten thread.

Okay, so there are a ton of guys in here that are working out, trying to work out, or 'thinking' about working out.

So, I figured I would start a thread. I am all about making myself accountable. The more people that I tell about working out, the more people I would let down by not going.

If you go to the gym.... then post here when you get back. If you do P90X, post here when you get done. If you ride the excercise bike.... post it here.

Anything you do to get in shape.... share with the board. I know I have gotten some great advice and feedback.

Also, post what you eat. If you post everything you eat, and you know others will be critical, you may think twice before you grab a Twinkie.

Okay, so, I went to the gym. I did five minutes on the cross climber to warm up. I stretched for about three minutes.

Then, I did three sets of squats with just 135. I did back extensions and hanging leg lifts. Three sets each. I did leg curls, calf extensions, abductor and adductor excercises as well.

On my leg day, I do very light chest exercises to work on my explosive power. I do three sets of six pushups as explosively as I can. I throw the excercise ball up like a chest pass while laying on the bench.

Then, I finished off my workout with 30 minutes on the eliptical.

As far as my diet.

Breakfast two pieces of peanut butter whole wheat toast, protein shake, and banana.

I have had another banana, two yogurts, and a handful of cashews as snacks.

I didn't have a 'lunch' per se.

Kids had sloppy joes with lean beef (as if that makes it great).... I took a baked potato, and put a serving of sloppy joe over it, with jalapenos and 2 oz's of lowfat cheddar cheese.

I have also had shotgun with water, and synthesize with water.

I won't eat again before bed.


Okay, I know putting everything down here will open me up to criticism. I know some will think that I am doing things all wrong. I appreciate any advice, but I have done a lot of reading and talking to trainers.... so, I have an idea of what I am doing.... or at least what I think I am doing.

The point of this thread, isn't to get into pissing matches about how to do things.... but rather to give ourselves a gold star for making an effort.

Try not to beat anyone down on this thread, because this is about encouragement.

Yeah sometimes that happens. We get those days where we don't feel like going to the gym. Something may be going on in your life that is draining your enthusium or mending your will. I can totally relate.

Those are the most challenging days I find. It really demonstrates a true testament of will on our part. How bad do we really want it? That's the question. Are our desires to workout and achieve goals in fitness incredibly strong? The ones who succeed are those who really want it.

I always have to remind myself that even though I may not feel like going BEFORE I hit the gym, I'll always feel better AFTER going. That's always enough motivation.

I find that what does it for me is the before and after results. I just started doing this recently, and it is one of the best things I've done.

I like to draw comparisons from past photos to present photos and see the differences. That's where Im like, WOW! keep up the good work buddy. Better yet, lets improve, there is room for it, and Im going to get better.

*I highly reccomend to anyone who has just started working out or has fitness goals to take before and after shots of yourself. Trust me, you'll see the difference a lot more than just looking at yourself in the mirror everytime.

Somebody said recently that they never felt good after not going to the gym because they didn't want too, but always felt good after going when they didn't want too. I keep that in mind on the occasions I don't "feel" like going. So far it's 100% accurate.

So long as I get a good night's rest, it is rare for me not to feel like going to the gym.

But, when I don't feel like going, I tell myself that I will go do one exercise.... and if I still don't feel like being there, I will go home. I have yet to leave after the first exercise.

Yeah, the hardest thing for people to do is to actually go, but after they get there....

That's how its like for me some days. I drag myself there, but I feel great leaving, wishing I could have done more of this...more of that. The after workout feeling is great.

Things that are not so great: Increasing weight to the point that your glutes are sore. **** me. I could barely play soccer tonight. Side note: Bad idea to do leg day in the morning and soccer that night.

My lower back is tweaked and I have no idea why. It's not bad at all, but I'm afraid of lifting Saturday and making it worse. Hopefully it'll just be better by then.

So so night last night. My youngest had a sleepover, and I got to the gym late. I only had 45 minutes to workout. In a way it was good, because I was doing supersets and got a great pump. But, I couldn't lift as heavy because I had no rest between lifts... and all my lifts were chest/shoulders/triceps.

Still got the workout though.... so that is good.

I am wondering how I am going to get to the gym today..... very busy day, and plans tonight. Today is back/biceps, which is a close second to chest/triceps. There is something that is very satisfying about actually lifting your body weight when doing a pull up. Maybe it is just because I wasn't able to do them six months ago.....

It could be a bunch of different things. It could be twisting wrong on the treadmill, stepping wrong, sleeping wrong.

Even if your lower back hurts, I would still do all my lifts that don't involve it directly.

I've had zero lower back issues since I started doing kettlebell swings (of course, I also do planks and such now). When I was doing "normal" weightlifting previously, I was having a ton of lower back issues. I think that was because I was doing lots of crunches and shit like that then as well as just throwing weight around without really focusing on strengthening my core (though at the time, I gave a lot of lipservice to core work... I don't think what I was doing was very effective).

I could also see, though, how kettlebells could completely screw up my back if I hadn't gotten instruction and gotten my technique down prior to starting them.

Most people don't do enough or the right things to strengthen the core. The core is about stabilization, not dynamic movement so much.
