BS. It is an entitled generation of kids, raised by parents who were raised based on the "sage" advice of Dr Spock and parents who buy their kids whatever they want (even the schools they can go to whether they earned it or not).

I can tell you I got swatted when I deserved it, I got raised by my parents (and my aunts and uncles too when the parents were around). ABUSE is ABUSE and Corporal Punishment is Corporal Punishment. They are not the same.

IF Hill did abuse that child, then bye bye to the NFL. Your career is not an entitlement, it is a privilege that you can piss away if you want. I don't feel sorry for him at all. What I have not heard if there are other family members complicit or if Hill and baby mother did not properly supervise their child when with other adults in the family. Not all of the story out yet.......

That press conference was done to prosecute Hill in the court of public opinion since he can't do it criminally. If what duncan is saying is true I don't blame him for being frustrated.

This incident aside, "abuse" is a standard that varies greatly when it comes to people disciplining their children.

Some people never ever spank their kids and think that's abuse. Some people whip their kids with belts. Legally that's not abuse unless its excessive.

I wouldn't say I was abused as a child but I got my ass whooped plenty. In todays society it might be called abuse but that's just the way it was and I don't think it was abuse. I wasn't going to school all beat up etc....

It's not a black and white issue, lots of gray area.

I got the shit beat out of me by my Dad too, Fists, objects etc. I only "deserved" it 25% of the time. He was just an angry drunk. I turned out alright. Thats not the point.

I have never spanked, hit or threatened physical punishment to my son. He is prospering. Again, not the point.

So you think beating a child with objects like coffee mugs, or lashing them with hangers and wires is not a black and white issue?

Just asking.
I have been whipped with a wet dishrag, which was particularly painful, and left unpleasant welts. I have been beat with a garden hose, which was not as bad as the wet dishrag, and left brusing instead of welts. I have been on the business end of belt many times, including the buckle on a couple of occasions. And I have even had to perform the cliche go-pick-your-own-switch ritual.

That's a pattern of abuse. But, if getting whipped with a belt happened once, and in that moment I was trying to get away, and my parent was trying to get a few good swats in, to establish that I shouldn't do whatever I did again, and I got hit someplace other than my ass, it amounts to a poor choice of discipline, but not abuse.

I know many people who were disciplined with the belt, and think they are better off because of it, and who have used the same discipline on their children. When my kids were young, just the threat of a whipping was enough to get them in line. But I would never presume to tell my friends who used the belt that they were wrong, or abusing their child.

But I would suggest they read any number of studies that spell out the psychological damage that being whipped or spanked, or otherwise physically disciplined.

But if someone believes that type of discipline, that has been passed down from generation to generation, worked on their parents, and then worked on them, and that it should work on their own children as well, they see that type of discipline as a proven method to keep their children in line, to help them learn to be respectful, and to learn that their actions or bad behaviors have consequences.

Not all parents who choose spanking or whipping are bad parents. It's easy to judge others based on your own views and experiences.

Yeah, I can't think of anything a 3 year old could do that would warrant being beaten to the point duncan described, but that's just me.

There is no reason for the family to protect the abuser if it isn’t Hill.

There are 100 million reasons for the family to protect the abuser if it is Hill.
