FA: What's Left?

(FB) Leonard Weaver, 26
(DE) Mike Wright, 27
(DT) Shaun Cody, 26
(LB) Marques Harris, 27
(CB) Leigh Bodden, 27
(KR/PR) Justin Miller, 25

I'd take four of them without blinking.
Wright, Weaver, Harris, and Miller. Justin Miller as a pure returnman could be just what this Special Teams needs. He's dangerous and can provide a much needed spark there.

I'd love to have Weaver... Especially if LJ's going to stay (I think he will).
A good young FB like that can help resurrect him. And Matt Cassel's going to need a solid running game to succeed.

I'm not much of a fan of Shaun Cody, but he could figure in if we do switch over to the 3-4.

Bodden's some kind of CB. We've got two young guys I'm extremely satisfied with, but if they just wanted to get better there...Bodden could help.

The Chiefs still have too many holes to try addressing them all in Free Agency. We're still going to need depth at several positions.

From http://nashvillecitypaper.com/news.php?viewStory=66661

"However, don’t rule out a run at Torry Holt if (when?) he is released by the St. Louis Rams. At 32, Holt is nearly four years younger than Owens, and is the type of smart upgrade the Titans have tried to make when looking to add to experience to a position. Holt is due a roster bonus on March 17, which could precipitate his release. Would the Titans be willing to part with a late-round pick to land him before he gets to the open market?"

I'd like to see the Chiefs make a run at Torry Holt. I think he could provide some senior leadership and still be a productive receiver for us.

I bet some team sends STL a late round pick for him before he's realeased.

On a related story with Torry Holt, the St. Louis Rams are reportedly trying to trade 33 year old, left tackle Orlando Pace but I think rather than trade for a 33 year old (recently) often injured left tackle, Kansas City would be better off signing a 32 year old right tackle, Mark Tauscher. Tauscher had an ACL injury last year that caused him to miss the last 3 games, but he has been pretty solid for 9 seasons with Green Bay. If we signed Tauscher, Branden Albert would stay at left tackle, and KC would not have to give up anything in a trade for Pace. Another drawback to a trade for Orlando Pace is his current contract, $5.975MM in 2009, $7.175MM in 2010, and $8.375MM in 2011.

Of the remaining free agent offensive linemen, Mark might be the best option.

I read, maybe on profootballtalk, that the Rams were trying to package Holt and Pace in a trade deal. That sounds more like the work of someone's imagination though. Unlike the MLB, not too many multi-player deals are made in the NFL.

Did not see him on the wish list, but another offensive lineman is gone -

ATLANTA — Free-agent center Brett Romberg, who started six games for the St. Louis Rams in 2008, has signed with the Atlanta Falcons.

The 29-year-old Romberg played in 33 games, including 18 starts, for the Rams the last three years. He started nine games in 2007.

With the Falcons, Romberg is expected to compete for playing time behind Todd McClure.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Gotcha.

And Devery Henderson is a possession receiver...

Khalif Barnes's price tag might be falling...

RAIDERS EXIT KHALIF BARNES CHASE FOR GOOD
Posted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2009, 5:14 p.m.
After remaining a long-shot possible destination for Jaguars free-agent tackle Khalif Barnes, the Oakland Raiders have decided to call it quits.

According to RaiderBeat.com, the team no longer is interested in signing Barnes.

Multiple reports last week linked the former University of Washington lineman to Oakland.

His agent, Kenny Zuckerman, has said that unnamed teams are interested in him, but Zuckerman has not identified any of the other supposedly interested teams.

Also Jacksonville just signed former Eagle Tra Thomas to replace him so there is no going back home.

YOU said that if Willis visited KC, he would have SIGNED with KC.

You really need to go back and read what you posted but I get the feeling that something's been lost in translation.

All I said, from the outset, was that he should've been brought in for an interview at the very least. I went on to say he probably would've come, for a visit, if he'd been asked. Hell he went to Oakland and that team is in disarray. I'm guessing he would've come here.

I think you might wanna try that. I never said he would've signed with KC.
I just wanted Chiefs brass to take a look at the guy.

I REALLY don't want Khalif Barnes, but we have jack and shit at Right Tackle.
What do you do there?

Draft a kid and force him into the starting lineup?

Or take a chance on a guy coming off a late-season injury in Tauscher?

We at least have an option at Center and Guard.
We have NOTHING at Right Tackle.

We can't go into the season with our $14 million dollar man playing with a sieve at RT.

What is the upside of signing Mark Tauscher?

Does he help this team when it can be competitive in 3 years, or does he just get us back to 8-8?

Teams should always have a twin-focus.
I think doing the best you can to compete in the moment is necessary.
I also think you have to look ahead.

I see nothing wrong with signing a veteran at a position where you have no identifiable solutions on the roster and drafting a kid who can take over down the road.

What's the alternative?
Drafting a RT in the 4th Round and depending on him to be your every-down starter from the outset? I think that sets a guy up for failure.

Additionally...
I think we need to shore up the Offensive Line so the younger players at other positions can develop.

More time to throw the ball = more offensive efficiency = more opportunities for guys like Will Franklin to grow

Tauscher would be a great acquisition if he were healthy. I thought Willis was perfect because he was just 27 years old and could still be productive 3 years from now. That's water under the bridge at this point though.

Lots of players on this roster could be gone in three years.
I think you have to plan for that, but you have to line up and play come September too...

Several teams would like to add Torry Holt to their team but they might not have the money without a re-work of the contract. Torry has a $1.25MM roster bonus that is due March 17th. John Clayton of ESPN says that trading or releasing Holt and Pace will save the Rams $15.2MM. Pace is scheduled to make $6MM this year so Holt must have a pretty high salary for this year. Some quick calculations indicates that Holt's current contract (bonus + salary) for 2009 would be close to $9MM, so that might eliminate some teams from bringing him in.
