Ok. So let's disregard the numerous awards and the praise that it receives from people that know about taking vehicles off road. The reason that the Wrangler is THE choice is because a bunch of people drive them.

I like your logic.

Screw BMW M5 series because you hardly ever see them on the road. The mid-size 4 door sedan that OWNS is the Chevrolet Malibu because you see a ton of them on the road.

You definitely want a Ford Focus instead of the Golf GTi because you see more of those as well.

Does not matter that the Discovery kills the Wrangler in every possible way... it's simply not the best because there are more Wranglers.

The Discovery isn't as good as the Wrangler. It's an unreliable heap, and that's probably got something to do with why they don't even build them anymore.

Thanks. I'm actually not local. But I do like them, and living where it's winter 6 months of the year would appreciate the all around capability both commuting as well as recreationally (but not seriously) being used off road. I think I could be happy with a stock model fairly close to base level.

They were replaced by the LR4 in 2005. And at a cost of almost $50k it could and is easily outperformed by a Wrangler.

I have a 2000 XJ with a small 2" lift and slightly larger than stock tires. We had a ton of snow last winter and I had absolutely no issues getting around.

I saw plenty of other 4x4's in ditches. I am sure a lot of that had to do with the drivers of those vehicles.

Yeh... the LR4 is the Land Rover Discovery 4. I'm looking at a picture of a 2010 Discovery 4 right now.

What is your opinion on the ESP and other features offered at the Rubicon level versus the lower trims?

The Rubicons are designed to be able to drive off the showroom floor start rock crawling. If this is not in your plans now then I would go whit a lower package.

All these features can be added with aftermarket equipment later on if you decide you want that capability.

Thank you. I wouldn't be rock crawling, although it would see more off road use than the average 4wd. My concerns chiefly revolve around commuting in a northern state and being able to handle winter off road duty (with snow always on the ground.) Nothing too crazy.

You might consider the rubi for the extra clearance if you have to worry about driving through a lot of deep drifts. Or you can get a small aftermarket lift for not much $. Make sure you have good A/T tires.
