Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

While it's true technically that we don't know what's going on behind the scenes, a lifetime of following this league tells us things are probable.

What we know: The tag is really Veach's only way of bringing Brown's price down.

What we can safely assume: If they've removed that "threat," it means that the only thing they had to bring his price down didn't work, and now Brown can let his freak flag fly.

And yes, it happened really fast. Which means one possibility is that they know there's no way they're agreeing on numbers. It's also possible that it went that fast because they know exactly how they want to handle it and they're still looking to bring him back.
Okay, he wasn't released. Whatever. They went from "we're going to talk about it," to "w aren't going to talk about it," in about 5 minutes.

Like I said, anything is possible. The speed of it is what surprised me.

It wasn't really bringing his price down though. $20 million would be the floor and the starting point.

They're still talking about it. The league year doesn't start today. They can still send offers back and forth for the next week. Crazier shit has happened.

Absolutely, probability and NFL history suggest he's gone. I'm not denying that.

But I don't think you can "safely" assume anything at this point.

You get one guaranteed year, good luck avoiding injuries.

vs

You get five years at 23m a clip, with $X guaranteed for a half-decade, no matter what happens.

The tag is what brings Brown down. That's its purpose.

It didn't work this time, and that's business.

Again, the shortness of the talks really lead to two possibilities. Either they're so far apart it's never going to happen or they're close enough that using the tag wasn't necessary.

Of course the first option is more probable. But people are acting like the 2nd option doesn't even exist.

Yep, the equivalent of a mid-round second for 2 years of above average LT play that cost $20M total is not a bad deal.

Be prepared for some combo of Dillard and a 1st round LT next year.

Probably via a trade up to 20 or so. Functionally you’re using the 2024 3rd comp pick for OBJ a year early.

I'm just acknowledging possibilities. Not talking about probabilities at this point but if I were a betting man, I'd agree with the majority here that he's gone.
The Chiefs don’t have the money to pay him. They put a hard line in the sand last year and no deal. Did it again yesterday, no deal. And I can’t blame Orlando. He’s by far the best FA tackle out there and teams always overpay bc they have the money to do it.

The fact of the matter is the Chiefs just don’t have the money right now to tag Orlando again. It gives them zero flexibility in FA.

Why would you anchor your cap down for a player you know won’t accept what you’re offering?

Would you anchor your cap down for a player you know is intent on signing a deal, especially when his 1st year cap hit is HALF of what the tag would pay?

Again, you're just assuming that they have no chance to reach a deal. That's all it is - an assumption. Just like the assumption the Chiefs don't have the money to pay him. They clearly do, if that's what they want.

I'd be fine with this. I'd be fine trying Dillard out on the right side.

Actually, we don't know if they're talking at all at this point. But I get what you're saying.

The speed of it suggests that they're way off on the numbers. If they were close, I'd imagine the news would be something like "talks continue." Or nothing at all at his early date.

Whatever. I'm sure Veach gameplanned for this. And at this point, I don't hate the idea of letting OBJ go if he's going to demand top-3 LT money for 5-6 years.

I don't hate any of the options. That's the nice thing about being "over" all of this stuff.

Whatever they do, I'm fine with it.
