Amazing how much better the run D looks when you put your best players on the field.

We don't suck because of running backs, but our current running back room is not great.

As Clay pointed out yesterday, those rushing stats for the Chiefs are wildly skewed by some Hardman and Hill jet sweeps and a few Mahomes scrambles.

Our current RB's are:

1) CEH - 4.7 yards per attempt - Injured
2) DW - 3.5 yards per attempt - not good
3) DG - 4.4 yards per attempt - very limited action, jury still out.

We could use a more dynamic back in this offense that had the potential to be a HR hitter, occasionally. (a la Dam. Williams from a few years back).

If it means Jones moves back to DT, the addition makes a huge difference.

And for as disappointing as Hitchens is, he IS better than Niemann, especially in the run game.

A base set with Thornhill at safety (allowing Mathieu to be more aggressive) with Gay, Bolton and Hitchens at LB has more than enough raw talent to be steady against the run. Especially with a healthy Ward on the field as he's always been game in run-support.

This team should be fine against the run. They just need to trust their teammates and do their jobs.

Frank Clark actually played well last night. If he can play with that same energy along with Jones at DT and now Ingram at DE, our ability to pressure should be back to a respectable level.

I still think Jones at DE has been overblown a bit at this point.

From day 1 he was going to be moving inside on passing downs (and largely has been). The issue has been his presence outside on early/run downs. And frankly, that's just not Ingram's strong-suit anyway.

This isn't Ogbah - Ingram's a pass-rush specialist. And while you may see some improvement from what we were getting from Danna or Okafor on pass-rush downs, it won't be a major difference-maker otherwise.

Yep. Add in Gay and Bolton, both of which have been major upgrades at LB, and hopefully the benching of Sorenson in favor of Thornhill, and our _efense may actually be decent.

Clark was a force last night. He and Jones looked great. The whole DL looked great. Bolton and Gay looked real good. It's starting to come together a bit. Adding Ingram is exactly what this team needs.

Now if Mahomes and co. can figure out this whole cover-2 thing....

Yeah, I still think we have a diminished player here, but last night was about as good as we can expect from this version of Frank Clark.

He still took plays off when they were going away from him (too many times I saw him jogging towards the pile). But at least he showed more fire and made himself valuable.

How much of that is due to the quality of opponent is an open question, but in the past no level of opponent was poor enough to make him look decent. So it's progress.

Jones was trash at DE. He crashes inside at the slightest hint of a middle run, so consistently fails to set an edge & the RBs gash us outside. He was getting zero pressuire as well, so why keep him there? The experiment failed. Placed back at DT, he was massively disruptive last night.

The most disappointing aspect of this experiment = Reed. WTF is up with that guy? He was supposed to be an anchor at DT which allowed Jones to take a rotation at end. Reed hasn't done shit, and combined with Jones' aforementioned failure, we effectively have had half a defensive line, at best. It is no wonder this _efense is historically atrocious.
