Battery powered mowers

Does anyone have experience with battery powered lawnmowers? Our old gas mower has died and needs to be replaced. Frankly, I'm tired of giving gas mowers tune-ups, slopping gas all over the place, and pulling the cord to start it. Most of our land can be mowed with the John Deere, but there are 2 small areas we can't reach with it. The mower needs to be self propelled since both areas are on a hill. One area is about 15' x 30' and the other is 30' x 60'. Does the 40v provide enough power or do I need to go with the 56V? Ryobi or EGO?

How many laps does it take with a 14 inch mower?

I've had the Ryobi 40V for about 3 years and am pleased with its performance. My wife likes it too because it is light weight and easily maneuverable. I was getting about 1.67 yards mowed per charge - so picked up a 2nd battery to switch out. I did have a battery go dead and Ryobi replaced it free of charge.

Not sure, never counted.

I mow every two weeks and hit the edges with my Ryobi weed whacker. It usually takes about 30-45min to complete the job.

My pals and I have found the same, but we live in the PNW where it's pretty wet most of the year.

I use one on my yard (6500 sq ft). I also have battery the powered trimmer and blower. I have three batteries. If I stay on top of work and don't let the grass grow to tall I can mow, trim, edge and blow in 1 hr. Battery lasts 20-40 mins based on the strain the machine is under.

We have two chargers and between the three batteries there's always a charged up battery. Take about 20 min to charge a battery.

I have the Lowe's Kobalt brand 80 volt system. This will be our third year using them. Only issue are the back wheels on the mower have started to wobble (bearings have worn out). Its an easy fix to install new wheels.

I have a half acre so got a riding mower or I'd have tried electric. I do have an electric trimmer which works ok.

I tell you what though, 20-25 minutes to get half an acre done is nice.

ok, back to your electric talk.

If you are going to go electric make sure you get a battery powered one rather than the whole plug into an extension cord type of deal. Growing up I used to always have to use the lawn mower with an extension cord plugged into it. My gosh, never in my own household will we have one of those things..
Ha, we had one of those for a time when I was a kid. Yeah, lugging around an extension cord and trying to not run over it sucked.

As for mowers, I have been curious about the battery-powered ones myself for many of the same reasons already mentioned. I have had a Kobalt 40v trimmer and pole saw that I really like. I just moved over Thanksgiving and we have a lot more land now so I had to get a riding mower. I haven't mowed yet so we'll see. But I think there might be some smaller, intricate areas where I'll still need the push mower. My gas powered mower still works but it may not for long.

What do you mean by 'careful'?
And besides, I never mow my lawn when it is wet now.

I went all in on the Ryobi 40v ecosystem a couple years ago, and for my relatively small yard (maybe 2500 sf of grass), it works great. The mower battery usually lasts me 2 mows, so no issues at all getting through it at least once. I also have the edge trimmer, hedge trimmer, and leaf blower, all of which came with a battery, so I have backups just in case I forget to charge one of them.

If you have a very large yard, it might not be ideal, but for small-ish yards, it's great. No oil or gas to deal with, no annual maintenance...it's a game changer for me. We also have lots of air quality issues out here in Denver, so it's nice to not be contributing to the smog with a gas mower.

What brand/model was that? Do they all do this or could yours have simply been a bad design?

Combined with the sound it makes i feel like i'm vacuuming my lawn, not mowing it haha.
I did a corded mower in between the gas mower and the battery mower I have now. I liked it, but man...dragging the cord around and constantly having to avoid cutting through it was a pain in the ass.

No. Ideally you would leave it between 20-80% charged if you're not going to be using it for a while (to maximize life), but for the most part, you just pop it in in the spring and go.

The electrics do have surprising power.

I also use a battery chainsaw, 18". Works great, runs about 20-30 minutes of hard cutting. Dropped and trimmed 3 medium size trees today, 12 to 18 inch diameter.
