Chiefs to hire Matt House as LB coach [no, really - they actually are this time]

Holy shit. I actually thought we should just straight up hire this guy as DC. He was on my list of top 3 candidates. We got him as LB coach?

****ing homerun hire if it comes to pass

Absolutely - I'm ecstatic that both of those guys decided to come over. There's nothing but upside here.

It's just something that, on the surface, seems questionable to me for THEM. Because confident don't mean stupid and they sure seem to have left jobs with equal ceilings and WAY higher floors to come here.

But as has been said - there's a reason for it. And the simplest one is likely the correct one, they believe this talent is better than it showed (I don't know how the Chiefs can promise them anything; they don't know if they can get anyone in particular signed or drafted).

I will say that if I could stay under BB and continue to learn from the greatest coach in NFL history or go back and coach under Spags and a HC that is largely indifferent to the defense, I'd almost certainly stay under BB. His defensive coaches have shown a lot more upward mobility than Reid's.

These are just ballsy defections from both guys. Staying put would've been a lot easier and very possibly better paths to bigger jobs.
There were reports Daly didn’t want to be resigned because of Schiano. Daly wasn’t even considered for the DC spot. He felt slighted so he didnt re sign

We don’t lack talent. 90% of the time players had no idea where to lineup. It was a confusing scheme

These guys both worked for Spags before, right? Maybe they just really enjoyed the experience and see an enticing opportunity given the low bar for success in turning around that defense.

Kansas City is the "it" team in the NFL right now, Reid is one of the most respected coaches, and we have a 23-year-old generational talent at QB. That has to count for something when you're deciding on making a jump like this.

So if you want to talk about 'betting on yourself', this is a MASSIVE gamble by these guys. I mean the defense is gonna take some serious shit if it doesn't turn around in a hurry and there's still a solid chance that there are genuine talent issues up and down that side of the ball.

I love this hire but man, it sure is ballsy by both him and Daly.
It does tell you that Spags commands a lot of respect in the coaching ranks. He wasn't my first choice, but can't say I'm not impressed by what's been happening.

The Chiefs are favored to go to the Super Bowl. Mahomes is a gold-plated meal ticket. Anyone can do this math.

I mean the flipside to my argument is obvious.

If Tom Brady isn't a thing, Mike Vrabel, Eric Mangini, Matt Patricia and Brian Flores are just guys. They aren't HC's in this league.

Those guys got exposure because the Patriots won and the Patriots won because of BB and Brady. A lot of guys owe Brady a Christmas card.

So you look at Mahomes as a guy that can get these coaches a lot of exposure and if they can demonstrate even baseline competence, especially coming of 2 seasons that fell beneath that threshold, they're going to get a lot of looks.

The issue is that I think BB is a wizard who makes his defensive coaches look exceptional. I'm not sure Spags is going to be that guy and I KNOW Andy Reid isn't.

It wasn't confusing for Eric Berry or Justin Houston. So yeah, even though scheme was an issue, they do lack talent.

He was probably tired of Belichick/Flores getting literally all the credit for the D's success when he was a major part of it too.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Three days after Kentucky announced defensive coordinator Matt House had decided to stay in Lexington amid interest from the Kansas City Chiefs, the Wildcat assistant has reversed course and decided to leave for the NFL job.

House was reported to be a candidate to be the Chiefs' new linebackers coach. After the initial announcement he was staying at UK, multiple NFL reporters tweeted House had wanted to take the job but was prevented from doing so because of his buyout at Kentucky.

UK players were informed of House's decision to leave the program Tuesday morning, a source told the Courier Journal.

With House gone, there are several likely candidates within Mark Stoops' staff to take over the defensive coordinator responsibilities. Stoops promoted from within the last time the job was open, elevating House from special teams coordinator to defensive coordinator after D.J. Eliot left the program.

Special teams coordinator Dean Hood was a former Power Five conference defensive coordinator at Wake Forest and FCS head coach at Eastern Kentucky. Defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale served as defensive coordinator at Cincinnati before coming to UK, and outside linebackers coach Brad White is considered a rising star in the business thanks to his NFL experience and work developing Josh Allen into the National Defensive Player of the Year and an early first-round NFL draft prospect in his first season at Kentucky.

Stoops will also have to find a replacement for House's recruiting ability as the defensive coordinator just finished a productive year recruiting Georgia, where Kentucky signed four players in its 2019 class.

House, who previously worked for Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo with the then-St. Louis Rams, led a UK defense that ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense and 23rd in total defense a year ago. Kentucky must replace seven starters from that defense in 2019, including Allen and the entire secondary.

According to the terms of House's contract, he would owe UK $150,000 to buyout the remaining year of the deal, which paid him $650,000 per year through the 2019 season.

I think it was a great move for House. Not sure what the staying power is for Kentucky football doesn't seem likely. House does a decent job with the linebackers for a year or 2 his next stop is a DC position in the league. I imagine he got a pay raise too.

As for Daly who knows. Probably didn't want to work with that insufferable prick Schiano.

This.

Anyone could see we've been having issues with technique/fundamentals since at least two years. When the whole defense (except perhaps the D-line) lacks in fundamentals it's not a matter of talent.
These guys are coaches and very good ones at that, they can tell the difference from poor talent and mishandled talent.
I'm not saying we have the best defensive personnel in the league, but saying they're playing below max potential is a euphemism.
