Browns firing Kokinis?

Rumor: Kokinis escorted out of building in Cleveland
Posted by Mike Florio on November 2, 2009 6:35 PM ET
There's a very strong rumor in league circles that the Cleveland Browns escorted G.M. George Kokinis out of the building today, the first business day into the team's bye week.

Jay Glazer has heard the same thing, and he'll be posting something soon at FOXSports.com.

For now, it's a rumor -- but a very, very strong one. (Or just "very". We're on the fence about it.)

Recently, the Browns fired Erin O'Brien, the director of football operations. O'Brien served as coach Eric Mangini's personal assistant when Mangini was the head coach of the Jets.

Kokinis was hand picked by Mangini to be the G.M. In many cities, the General Manager supervises the head coach and holds "final say" authority over the roster. In Cleveland, Kokinis is (was?) second fiddle to Mangini.

There previously had been speculation in league circles that Mangini would throw Kokinis under the bus if necessary to save Mangini's job. If the rumor of Kokinis' departure is accurate, the speculation will now be that Mangini sacrificed Kokinis now in order to get through the rest of the year, and possibly beyond.

I'm pretty sure it has already been done, multiple times. I would not look at what the Browns are doing as a cue to decide what would be the best choice for the [insert team you follow here].

What a mess

Mangini, Kokinis marriage was doomed from the start
Posted by Mike Florio on November 2, 2009 11:29 PM ET
It's beyond dispute that Browns owner Randy Lerner got it backward in January, when he hired coach Eric Mangini before hiring G.M. George Kokinis.

Under a Patriots-style arrangement, the situation could have worked if Mangini had final say over the roster and the draft, and if Mangini and Kokinis worked together to build consensus on players and draft picks.

But we've been reminded tonight that, in order to finagle Kokinis away from the Ravens, the Browns had to give final say to Kokinis. And the Browns did, at least in theory.

The problem? Kokinis apparently believed that his contract meant what it said regarding the extent of his authority.

And so we're told that Kokinis and Mangini repeatedly butted heads, and that their friendship quickly disintegrated due to their inability to reach an agreement on multiple personnel decisions.

It remains to be seen what will happen next. ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen report that Lerner hopes to hire Ernie Accorsi as a consultant. We've heard some speculation that Accorsi might already be involved, even though Accorsi recommended Kokinis for the job.

In fact, one publication already is reporting that Accorsi will take over as the team's General Manager.

Absolutely, unequivocally, UNTRUE.

How do agents make their money?

COMMISSION.

If the Browns are offering more MONEY, that means more dollars in the pocket of the agent.

If you think that agents think about anyone other than their own well-being, come to LA and spend a week with me.

It'll change your mind in a heartbeat.

"No way can we let word on how to release staph infection get out! After him security!"

The Browns will be hard pressed to snag in Free Agents that aren't on their last leg looking for that final payday. The only improvement the Browns hold over the Raiders is one team has Al Davis, another does not.

Mangini: A guy with the coaching prowess of Rich Kotite, the personnel skills of Matt Millen, and the interpersonal skills of a serial killer.

What better guy to get to run your franchise

He's fat and ugly, too.

And he has a terrible speaking voice. Mushmouth.

He's like the worst head coach in NFL history.

Kotite took teams to the playoffs in multiple years, and won in the playoffs.

He didn't truly become Kotite until his second job. He's definitely nearing Rod Rust, Art Shell, or Joe Bugel levels of incompetence.
