I get that he was GM when we won the WS, but the fact that we haven't been even close to competitive for a long time and most of his time here is reason to fire him. All kinds of other small markets are competitive.
It doesn't have to be one way or the other. You don't have to either win a WS every 10+ years and have shit teams otherwise or be relevant every year, but not win a WS. Dayton got lucky by winning in one of the 2 playoff years, but that doesn't mean we can't be competitive in the other years. |

Without the bullpen we had, then we don't go to the WS. That was lucky to assemble all those guys, but he's been trash at it for most of his time here. |

I actually don't think Dayton was ever that bad at trades. People get on him for that and I don't get it. His free agent moves usually weren't great but that's not unusual. He nailed the Greinke trade. That was a franchise altering trade and look at how many GMs trade a cornerstone player like that and get squat out of it. He did a great job in the Wil Myers trade and people killed him for that at the time. The Jeremy Guthrie trade was a winner. Same with Nori Aoki. Then the championship years he made good trades. The Josh Willingham trade wasn't amazing but he won that trade just off the fact that Willingham started the rally that tied the game in the 9th of the wild card game. Then obviously the Cueto and Zobrist trades were great the next year.
The Cahill trade in 2017 was one of the few he bombed but it at least made sense. The Wade Davis trade hurt too but Soler obviously had the talent, first Royal to ever lead the league in HRs and ended up being World Series MVP a few years later. The trade market isn't what it used to be though and I think in recent years it made him a bit gunshy because you just don't get the prospects you used to unless you have a young guy under a ton of control. |

I just hope the team becomes more transactional now.

But it was weird because I really don't think Dayton got straight up fleeced too many times in trades. What killed him was not drafting and developing players once they put a cap on how much you could spend in the draft, and making bad free agent signings like Ian Kennedy. What really happened is Dayton did a better job than anyone at exploiting the loopholes in the draft and when that went away it was never the same. That's why it really wasn't luck. Remember a couple years before the World Series teams all the experts were wondering if the Royals had built the best farm system of all time. It's like everyone has forgotten that, especially some of the national writers. |

Went to the game tonight, stayed for the fireworks. I genuinely had a great time tonight and can't complain. One of the best nights at k in a long time for me. Singer is only going to get better, young blood is doing just fine. They are playing with more fire and you can tell it's fun for them. Metheny still has to go along with a few others - Vance Wilson, looking at you bro, suck it in or get a gastric bypass.

1. Hired the wrong MLB manager to replace Yost. 2. Never applied a rebuild of pitching development to match hitting development. If he gets either of the above correct...even if not perfect...we aren't even having any of these discussions. We'd likely be watching the wild card standings each day. And the "luck" argument that keeps creeping up is a garbage BS argument by chicken-little arm-chair GM's that know very little about baseball. But stupid people and narratives persist.

Is JJ still GM or is he Prez of Baseball Ops and will hire or promote a GM? I can't seem to get clarity on this.

The fact of the matter is Moore has generally been a horrendous drafter on both sides of the ball, both before and after the draft changed. The pitching struggles are well known, but he hasn’t been much better on the hitting side either. It’s not an exaggeration to say that literally anyone on this board could have made the first round picks(and frankly on blind luck the rest of the draft) for the royals for the last 16 years and not done worse. Hitting on moose and hoss and probably Witt Jr is hardly some amazing feat of drafting when obvious top picks are taken at obvious times. That isn’t abusing draft loopholes, that’s doing the bare minimum of your job. And for every mid first or comp pick he has sort of hit on(singer manaea) he has busted 10 others who never even made the majors(does anyone honestly remember chase Vallot? I don’t) or were out in 3 years. That’s why he was fired, plain and simple. If the next guy drafts and develops guys as badly as Moore did then he will be out too. |
