It's Ridley Scott, man.

The Martian withstanding, he hasn't helmed a good movie since Kingdom of Heaven back in 2005.

OK, not being a douche here, but is Kingdom of Heaven widely regarded as a good movie? I left thinking the technical stuff was good. Probably excellent, but the creative was bad.

Maybe I'm off base.

Critics liked it. It didn't do well in the US but it made $211 million on a $130 million dollar budget.

But compare that film to Alien Covenant or Prometheus or Robin Hood or The Counselor any of his other turds between Gladiator and Black Hawk Down and The Martian, and it's pretty good.

Exodus: Gods and Kings was hilariously awful.

I'm still trying to figure out how in the hell that movie made it to production. Horrible.

I liked it. But I'm kindof a hack when it comes to historical dramas. I grade even the schlockiest of crap on a curve if I can find any reason to go Googling it for historical relevance.

I didn't even think Robin Hood was all that terrible. Von Sydow and Hurt; Blanchett being cold (her wheelhouse) and Oscar Isaac chewing scenery with bows and arrows and an almost kinda sorta realistic nod to the Magna Carta? It even had Mark Strong in it! I've loved that guy ever since I saw him in Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy. I've put 2 hours to far worse use than that movie.

Robin Hood sucked? Damn it I really enjoyed that one. I've rewatched it several times.

Well I don't think it sucks.

Sadly, you and I are in the clear minority in this regard. Though I think Hollywood hates it more for what it was supposed to be vs. what it was. They're all still mad that Scott bought a million dollar screenplay so he could take the name and throw the rest in the garbage.

If they're that bent out of shape, I'm not sure why they couldn't actually try the whole "Sheriff of Nottingham as the good detective" angle again. The idea is still out there since Scott didn't really even attempt it.

The Martian was also a disappointment IMO, it wasnt terribad or anything... but it also wasnt quite the epic masterpiece I was expecting, either

IMO, Gladiator was Ridley's Scott's peak as a storyteller.

From there, it's all been downhill.

An argument could be made he's never topped Alien which was one of his first films

Alien is great, but his finest work will always be Blade Runner.
