It's Time For a beverage....Long ****ing day Day!

Let me start out by saying it's been an "interesting day."

Last year I held a little shin dig out in the man cave around Christmas. At that time of year, a lot of friends who live out of state, are in town to see their parents. I have gas heat in the garage, along with a wood burning stove. Last year, it was around -20 with the wind blowing, so I fired up the wood burning stove, to keep up with the cold air flowing in from people opening the door to go take a wizz.

Everyone was having a good time, sucking down the "free beer" from Greg's beer fridge. One of my friends had just bought a new down jacket and he leaned against the stove pipe and melted his jacket. He was bitching about it and I reminded him that
stove pipes get hot and only a dipshit would try to lean on one.

Fast forward to yesterday.

The same crew is showing up this year (with their own ****ing beer) to do it again. I figured I would insulate the pipe in order to prevent some moron from trying it out as a leaning post and get branded. I called around and talked to some strokestick about the issue. He said, "no problem, "come on down and we'll get you fixed up!"

I don't know shit about insulation, so deferred to his expertise on the subject. He wanted to sell me 1 inch and I stepped up to the two inch, for added protection against dipshittery.

I installed it last night and decided to try it out over lunch to see how hot the insulation got. I threw in three logs and fired it up. About 15 minutes later, I start smelling smoke. I look up and the insulation is turning a mocha brown. WTF, I'm thing. About 2 minutes later, the stuff gets darker than the inside of on owls asshole and starts on fire! Oh shit oh dear!

I grabbed a pair of welding gloves and start smacking the hell out of it and it goes out, for a few seconds. I opened the garage door, reached into the stove, grabbed the logs and gave them a fling into the alley. I headed back around and start beating on the fired up insulation again to put it out. I ran over and grabbed a chair and a hunting knife and slit it down to the pipe. I tore the crap off and gave it a toss into the alley, on fire. I then got the rest of the hot coals out of there.

I called the pecker heads up that sold me the shit and graveled their ass, up one side and down the other, telling them that I damn near lost my garage, because they didn't know shit about their product.

He offered to refund my money. I sent him an email while we were on the phone, with pictures. You could hear his voice change and he said, "what do you want us to do?" I told him I obviously needed a refund, but also wanted him to pick up the tab for all new stove pipe. There is a bunch of melted insulation stuck to it and I was worried about the structural integrity of the metal after being "super heated." He told me I could "sand it off." I said look dickweed, I sucked in way to much of this crap when I was speed cutting it off the pipe, I'm not taking in more. I said you have two choices here Ace, you can step up and replace the pipe, or you can talk to my lawyer?

He saw the light and agreed to do that.

Close freakn call.

I talked with 3 fireplace outfits after the "3 mile island" and they told me about that stuff. They claim it still gets hot with my application. Not as hot, but it will still burn the hide off you. As I said before, If you don't know better than to lean on a hot stove pipe, leave your beer and get the **** out of my shop!

I dunno, I've touched the outside of my stack and can't feel a thing. I suppose it's possible that the single-wall on the interior of my house dissipates a fair amount of heat before it reaches the triple-wall. I've never seen an application where triple walled was used immediately coming out of the stove so maybe that's why.

Hell yes! I don't trust new product when it comes to fire. It's a damn good thing I don't, or I would be posting a "My garage burned to the fuggen ground" thread.

You can't be too careful, I was so ****ing nervous the first time I fired up my stove, I had two fire extinguishers and two 5 gal buckets of water inside next to it and a hose on standby outside. The fact that I designed and installed it myself gave me plenty of reason to worry, but it's been 8 years now and I've had no issues.

Yeah, I had two big fire extinguishers, but with that kind of internal burn in 2" insulation, they are useless. The welding gloves, hunting knife, getting it off fast and some luck, were the keys in this case.

I was really pretty sure that the end of this story included the phrase "tickets to the Seahawks game". I was way off.

Glad you're not embers, though.

After re-reading the OP, I can't figure out why you didn't just throw the flaming stuff into the pool. You do have an inflatable pool in your garage, right?

that was going to be my reply earlier when i read this but didn't reply until now. That the first problem is you are too damn nice and should leave it as is.

but you get down to the truth of it and find out incompetence has gotten worse in customer service these days.

glad it wasn't worse and enjoy your turkey day.
