Holmes ads 5 to 10 lbs

Sorry if a repost

Holmes motivated to stay healthy in 2005. CHIEFS NOTES: Holmes Bulking up for 2005
By Scout.com
Date: May 9, 2005

Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro running back missed the second half of the 2004 season. He also saw back-up Larry Johnson steal his thunder in the Chiefs offense. Johnson scored 10 times in the teams last five games and Holmes is not ready to concede anything to the former Penn State back.

Priest Holmes, who missed the final eight games of '04 with a knee injury that did not require surgery, continues to do his recovery at his San Antonio home instead of in Kansas City. On a recent visit to Arrowhead he was some five to 10 pounds heavier than his '04 playing weight, but the Chiefs insisted that it was new muscle and that they were satisfied that Holmes is making a full recovery and will be ready for the start of training camp.
Holmes has now been injured in two of the last three seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs. At the conlcusion of the 2004 season, Chiefs President Carl Peterson told reporters that he expected Johnson to get 8-10 carries per game. Holmes appears to be heading into the 2005 season with something to prove and that should lead to some competition at running back.

CHIEFS NOTES: The Chiefs have set their training camp dates. They will report to their River Falls, Wis., camp (a regional suburb of the Twin Cities) on Wednesday, July 27, with the first day of practice the next day. Two-a-days start Friday. The Chiefs will take a short bus ride to Minneapolis for their first preseason game on Aug. 12 before breaking camp on Friday, Aug. 19.

For the first time since they began going to Wisconsin in 1991, the Chiefs and Vikings do not have a joint workout scheduled. Last year's two-day session in Mankato, Minn., was marred by numerous fights the coaching staffs seemed unable to control.

The Chiefs took a pass on former Oklahoma quarterback Jason White but they did sign four players who attended their rookie camp on a tryout basis. After spending a couple of days at home to contemplate his NFL future, he accepted an invitation from the Tennessee Titans to tryout for them. They obviously had a different opinion of him than the Chiefs; they signed the former Big 12 Offensive Player of the year to a two-year contract and he will attend their training camp in July.

Center Mike Johnson, who started 31 consecutive games to conclude his career at Kansas State last year, joined Zach Ville, a defensive end from Missouri; Darius Jones, a defensive tackle from Wisconsin, and Justin Perkins, a cornerback from Connecticut, as players Kansas City signed after giving them a tryout.

Kansas City Agrees to Terms with First-Round Pick RB Larry Johnson
Jul 17, 2003, 4:30:00 PM
JUL 17 (afternoon)--Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Thursday that the Chiefs have agreed to terms of a seven-year deal with first-round selection (27th overall) RB Larry Johnson. He is just the second first-round pick from the 2003 NFL Draft to agree to terms. QB Carson Palmer, who was chosen with the first overall selection by Cincinnati, is the only other first-round pick to agree to terms with his club. As per Chiefs policy, no further terms of the agreement were disclosed.
“Obviously, I’m very pleased to have our first-round draft choice under contract at this time,” Peterson said. “This was a contract that we thought would be done because of the principals involved – namely Larry Johnson, the Johnson family and Larry’s agent, Marvin Demoff.

“As we said when we drafted Larry, he’s coming to the Chiefs to learn from a very talented running back and Larry gives us tremendous insurance at that position,” Peterson continued. “He has a lot to learn in the NFL, but he has the talent and work ethic to help the Chiefs in his first year and for many years to come.”

I'm still waiting for the Posnanski article for this offseason. "You hear the whispers, people say Larry Johnson is the next great thing, he did better than Priest. Priest is injury prone. Johnson should get the carries. Priest doesn't say a word, quietly working out all offseason. Once again, Priest Holmes has something to prove."

that's been the story of his life...

always proving people wrong about him...

btw, larry's 10 td's in 5 games would work out to about 32 rushing td's?

that's not very likely (ok, it's probably never going to happen), but it's intriguing to think we have another guy on our roster that may be setting touchdown records of his own once priest retires...

Priest has never been a breakaway type RB. I think 5 extra pounds would help him recover quicker if it is all muscle.

At this point, you can't really doubt Priest Holmes comeback ability.

And yet there are still people on here who would like to trade him off for a draft choice.

Wouldn't you think that adding 5-10 lbs might make him more able to handle the pounding, but make him more liable to get the leg injuries that have cut his most recent seasons short?

They won't do it but using Holmes and Johnson as a tandem splitting time 50-50 could very well lead to ove 1,000 yards for each back a 30 rushing T.D.s between the two. We have two guys who are highly motivated to prove something and we should take advantage of it.

Now Jason White will probably turn into the next Elway.
