I need to catch up on these. When the first one was released everyone else seemed to love it, but I didn't. Then I saw the second one and thought that movie was better than the first by a good margin. Loved John Woo movies at the time, but watched the second one again with my wife a month or two ago and she had to get her comments in on the final fight scene, which I kind of agree on. To be honest 1 and 2 haven't aged particularly well for espionage and action flicks what they used to be in the 90s/2000s and what they are today.

I never saw the third one, heard about the big scenes, heard it was good but I have never sat down and completely watched the third one. Saw Ghost Protocol in theaters, really enjoyed it. The prison break out scene in the beginning, the burj khalifa scenes were pretty excellent, thought it was a fun time at the movies. Since Ghost Protocol I haven't seen a single Mission Impossible movie, just bits and pieces on TV but never been really interested. So my wife and I are going to watch 3-6 before going to see 7.

See, i think MI:1 still holds up really well.

Apart from Tom Cruise looking like a godddamn baby.

"Kittredge, you've never seen me very upset" is still one of my favorite line-readings ever.

No, but unfortunately she's not alone in her beliefs.

I doubt MI will go that route, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Cruise runs that shop.

And just penned a nice little love story to the US Navy where an old white guy saves the day with his young white guy sidekick.

Gonna go ahead and say that as long as Cruise is in charge of things, MI is gonna be just fine.

Judging by Maverick, and his demonstration of gratitude for the support it received, he seems to have his finger on the pulse of the action movie fan base. I see no reason to worry about this getting mucked up, at least not in the regard being discussed (and likely not at all).

My brother got me the MI collection for my Bday (a month ago today). I am off next week so I will watch them all leading up to next Friday's release - will get tickets in advance for the Friday morning feature. Looking forward to it!

Please don't judge the series by the first two movies. By MI:3, it really started to find its footing. Moving from Woo to JJ Abrams was a night and day difference. One and two feel like movies from a different series, honestly. Hell, Cruise doesn't even fire a gun in the first one.

My wife and I are rewatching the movies and doing what someone else mentioned - starting with three. The third one has held up remarkably well. Philip Seymour Hoffman is such a great villain. I know the action set pieces just get bigger and bigger as the movies go on, but it's hard to top three for the raw emotion of the situation with his wife and the back and forth Cruise and Hoffman have.

I still think the first one is good. It establishes Hunt's...uh...ethos? For lack of a better word. Baldwin puts in on the nose a little too much in Fallout when he says something along the lines of "you refuse to lose members of your team and it's what creates the problems you face..." He acknowledges the benefits of it, but also that it's not a utilitarian calculus that creates potential catastrophe.

EDIT: Found it --

Quote:
You had a terrible choice to make in Berlin. Recover the plutonium or save your team. You chose your team, and now the world is at risk. Some flaw deep in your core being simply won't allow you to choose between one life and millions. Now you see that as a sign of weakness but to me that's your greatest strength. it also tells me I can count on you to cover my ass. Coming over here from the CIA was a lateral move, some say a step down - but I did it because of you. Don't make me regret it.
I do think the series really was at it's best with Renner involved as Brandt, but that ship seems to have sailed.

But the first movie still holds up.

Just...don't bother with the 2nd. There's no throughput from it. It establish no character development or motivation. It's just John Woo porn and it's really quite stupid.

I enjoy the first MI. But MI2 is the only one I really don't like.

You are correct on MI3, it's probably one of the best. Hoffman is great in that movie.
