2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Anyway... that aside...

Let's talk about buy-low Angels options. Dan Haren? Ervin Santana?

Thoughts on either being a trade target?

From the Grantland story.....

"Six years after he was hired, and 18 months after putting together The Best Farm System Ever, Dayton Moore is starting to feel some heat. Moore has publicly stated many times that rebuilding an organization from scratch is a process that takes eight to 10 years. That seems like an awfully generous time frame, given that Dave Dombrowski took over the Detroit Tigers in 2002, a situation even more hopeless than the one Moore inherited in Kansas City (the 2003 Tigers lost an American League–record 119 games). Three years later, Dombrowski had them in the World Series."

They are both very similar players with similar contracts. Like you said both have options for next season that will likely not be picked up. Probably the case for both since combined it would cost the Angels 28 million for one year of service from both guys combined. I would imagine the Angels might be interested in one of our pitching prospects that they could have for a low price given they have huge contracts with Wilson and Weaver.

Personally if I had the choice I would choose Haren because his best years are much better than Santana's best years and he has also been consistent both in games started and a sub 4 ERA. Also, if the Angels decide to pick up one of the options, it would likely be on Santana who has a cheaper deal, and is few years younger. But what would they want for him?

doesn't matter, Moore won't do it.

It's organizations like this that can so easily take the wind out of your sails, as a fan.

Not sure the Angels would move both. It's somewhat dependent on them acquiring Greinke and needing to open a spot in the rotation and some salary room.

In terms of cost, the actual salary of both would add about $20 million to the payroll for this season. Not sure what the Angels would be looking for in return.

I think, trying to nab one of them, you might be able to make it happen for one of the power RH relievers (Holland, Herrera) + Jose Mijares + minor prospect.

I like the idea of Haren... you'd get a pretty good look at him in the second-half of this season and then can either pick up a somewhat pricy team option ($15 million for next year) or try to work out an extension if he bounces back from this injury. He's going to be 32 before the start of next season, but still likely has several good years left.

I understand that Escobar is a good player but I don't see him in any All Star Games yet...Cain is completely unproven who can't stay healthy....Odorizzi from all accounts is NOT an ace, more like a 3rd starter...and Jeffress or whoever sucks.

I'd rather have Escobar at short every day than run Greinke out there every fifth day.

Yep. Single most important position on the field, and we have a damn good player manning it.

Haren would be ideal. He hasn't had less than 33 starts since 2004 and has been remarkably consistent.

We'd be in decent shape next year if we traded for him and signed a FA like Anibal Sanchez or Shaun Marcum because it would help bridge us to 2014 when Duffy, Paulino, and potentially Lamb and Zimmer are ready.

What do you think it would take to acquire 1.5 years of Haren?

Yeah, I'd like to see Haren brought in. Price will be something Moore might be willing to actually pay (likely lower than Garza).

I think, at worst, Haren is about the same pitcher as Garza, but he's got a little better chance, IMO, of being an ace type than Garza.

So ... I guess that means I'm now officially rooting for the Angels to acquire Greinke. Ha.

Lot of mileage on Haren, and he's at a point (age) where he could be a descending player. And back injuries are ones that generally just don't go away.

Incredibly high risk move.

No clue.

If the Angels acquire Greinke, they almost certainly aren't picking up Haren's option for 2013 ($15 million). So it really breaks out as a 1/2 season rental for a guy who has been hurt this year.

Greg Holland + Jose Mijares + a minor league guy or two might be a good starting point.

You definitely should be able to get away without including any of the minor league futures game participants.

Compare that to Garza, who almost certainly would require Yordano Ventura in return, and I like it. Not only is it a cheaper option, it's one that has more upside.

Well he is still going out there starting so I guess his injury can't be too serious. He might just need a couple of skipped starts? To me he seems like a guy who could be Gil Meche part 2.
