The everyday lineup needs to consist of Gyorko at 3b, Garcia at 2b and Martinez in LF.

Wong's error in the 10th was unbelievable on any number of levels: 1) drops an easily catchable ball, 2) has PLENTY of time and still airmails a bad throw wide of the bag and 3) Carpenter looking like a complete reerun trying to make the play. A real 1B comes off the bag slightly and makes the tag, there was plenty of time and space to do that. Marp really belongs in the American league because he is a triple-minus defender at every position.

Oh, but if Wong doesn't blow an easy out for any Legion baseball second baseman he's never put in the position to do so.

Not to mention having Oh out there for 2 innings. Plenty of blame to go around. And somehow, still only one game back. I am not optimistic, just surprised that the Cubs aren't already 10 up.

The problem is between the terrible fundamentals and the in game mismanagement there's enough talent to win 80 games. 80 games keeps Matheny around.

Cubs are playing like shit. The starting pitching has been garbage and the offense has been just as bad. But Maddon is "perfectly happy" with how they've been playing. Ignoring the obvious of continuing to have a slow base runner with 30+ HR power clogging up the bases in the leadoff position with his pal from Tampa who hasn't hit 20 since 2012 and slugging under .400 in the cleanup spot.

A guy on my Cardinals board said "it looked like he was trying to catch a chicken..."

Yeah, I'd say that about covers it.

The guy is just a bad defensive player and it isn't due to athleticism. I've can't recall seeing anyone with the hand/eye coordination to be a silver slugger and solid base athleticism be as truly abysmal defensively as Carpenter is.

It has to be mental. There has to be some kind of block when he puts a glove on because the man just cannot field a position adequately. Honestly, he may have done the least amount of damage when he was at 2b.

Schwarber has always confused me as the leadoff guy, but then again Maddon is still in love with having the pitcher bat 8th despite common knowledge that it bites you in the ass far too often. I would go Zobrist/Rizzo/Bryant/Schwarber in the 2-5 slots. Jon Jay would make a serviceable leadoff guy given he just knows how to get on base.

Also gotta love the one-two punch of champs resting on their laurels/everybody stepping up to play the champs.

Last night sounds a lot like opening night with Matheney bringing Oh out for a second inning then Wong giving up a key error to **** them.

Whenever I see Wong I can't help but remember that Aqua Teen episode with Mr. Wongburger who is just a talking dick.

Honestly, at this point barring a trade the best option IMO is to put Diaz at 3rd, brig up Dejong, putGarcia at 2nd everyday and platoon Gyorko and Carpenter.
DFA Wong and Peralta.

Your 'best plan' is to bench the guy that hit 30 HRs last year and is presently the best hitter on the team so that you can play DeJong, who's absolute upside is....the guy you want to bench. Meanwhile Diaz, who isn't hitting a lick, still plays 3b? So you've moved him down the defensive spectrum when his bat isn't even playing at SS right now.

Wait....who's playing SS in your 'best option'? Surely not DeJong. I don't care if he's playing SS in Memphis; dude ain't a shortstop. He plays it the same way Gyorko plays it...tolerably.

Your best option is too complicated and kinda stupid.
