Damm computer

This thing is screwed. I don't know what the hell is going on here, but my computer is screwed. Nothing loads. If, and when, it does load, it takes forever. I don't know if there is a virus or the fact that my kids have loaded so much $hit, but this thing sucks.

Now...
How the hell do I reformat the hard drive. I basically want to start over.

HELP...

Be patient, go get AVG, run it. Be patient go get SPybot, run it. After that, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and get rid of everything you don't like.

Before you do anything else go to your start and then to RUN and type in msconfig and push OK

Then go into startup

If you have windows XP then turn off EVERYTHING except your antivirus (providing you have some)

If you have windows 98 or ME then turn off everything except systray and your antivirus (providing you have some)

apply changes and restart your machine

go to download.com and get:

Spybot Search and Destroy

SpywareBlaster (spybot recomends this in thier imunization section)

Ad-Aware (personal edition)

get all three of these and install them, update them and run them. SpywareBlaster doesn't really run it is just and ActiveX control program!

If these don't help then I would get a utility from your hard drive manufacture' website and write zeros to it then reformat it and reload!

if you REALLY want to format the best way IMO is to use the disk that came with your hard drive.

if you dont still have you can download it

maxtor = www.maxtor.com etc

you make sure and get a complete format that way

but like the others ... i suggest you check the other stuff out first

you also might wanna check your device manager screen and see it everything is still install correctly... a screwed up mobo driver with kill a computer real quick.

start> settings>control panel>system>

hardward tab>device manager

look for the yellow exclamation marks

you might reinstall your basic drivers again just in case

motherboard drivers,video card drivers etc

you might also push the CTRL+ALT+DELETE at the same time to get your task manager window. You can check and see what's running and active on your computer. The performance tab will show you if your CPU is running at 100% and how much memory is being used.

(all this is based on the assumption that you are using window xp)

Isn't it just as good to delete the partition? Fug it all, run fdisk, the boot to your Windows CD.

But first, I'd run all the stuff suggested earlier.

ya... but seems like to me fdisk doesn't format the initial boot sector of the hard drive and can leave trace amounts of data.

some viruses target the boot sector

seems like the manufacturer works better ... but that's JMO.

here's a tip. go into task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and end every (or most) process belonging to your username except explorer (in the processes tab). that will make it a lot easier to run spybot and other tools while your troubleshooting. it will also allow you to see what programs and spyware are currently running.

turning them off in msconfig is good but a lot of them reinsert themselves during reboot.

I will almost guarantee you that your problem is spyware, as others have suggested. If you can manage to run Spybot or Adaware one time you've got it dicked.
