How is Jeff Triplette and his crew of zebras?

I can't keep them all straight. I hope he calls a fair game.

He's better than Jerome Bogar, but worse than everyone else.

His crew led the league in ejections and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in 2016. He also called a penalty on the wrong team last year.

He also lost track of what down it was a couple years ago. He's always been a flag happy crew and is touchy with pass interference penalties.

He favors offense and the home team much more often than the average head official.

Several years ago when Todd Haley was the head coach, the Chiefs were playing a game against Seattle and Triplett's entire crew forgot what down is was. Haley basically had to spell out for him which plays had been ran to correct him on the downs. He was fairly calm for being Todd Haley and how often he blew a gasket.

This is probably true... but Triplett's crew is pretty well regarded as one of the sloppiest over the past few years. You could rattle off a pretty long list of things he's messed up.

From two years ago

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/09/jeff...st-referee-nfl

Quote:
Jeff Triplette, the longtime NFL referee who seems to be at the center of almost every officiating mistake or controversy, almost had another inexplicable screw-up during the Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions game on Sunday Night Football. It was one of Triplette’s more bizarre calls in a career filled with them because it wasn’t an innocent, negligent mistake (such as hitting Orlando Brown in the eye with a flag), a case of mind-boggling obtuseness (such as when he thought BenJarvus Green-Ellis wasn’t touched when falling to the turf for a 2013 touchdown), not keeping up with what’s supposed to be his field (such as when chains were moved in a Giants-Redskins Monday night game and retroactively put back) or messing up explanations (overtime rules are difficult to convey, to be fair).

No, this was a simple case of not knowing one of the most common rules in the NFL rulebook, a rule that a majority of football fans know. (It’s not the first time something like this has happened. In 2009, when Triplette went to the booth to review a play that wasn’t reviewable.)
From last year

http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/p...-on-wrong-team

Quote:
Referee Jeff Triplette appeared to call a penalty on the wrong team Sunday at Ford Field, continuing a rocky year of high-profile calls for his crew.

The latest incident occurred with 7:55 remaining in the second quarter. A flag flew while Detroit Lions running back Dwayne Washington finished a 14-yard gain. Triplette could be seen checking with umpire Shawn Smith about the penalty, then announced an illegal hands to the face foul against Lions center Graham Glasgow.

This play was called a penalty on Lions center Graham Glasgow instead of Bears defensive tackle Eddie Goldman.

The replay, however, clearly showed Chicago Bears defensive tackle Eddie Goldman putting his left hand under Glasgow's facemask and pushing back for an extended period. Eventually Goldman added his right hand as well. Glasgow's hands never came close to Goldman's head during the play, almost all of which was visible on the television replay.

The play was not reviewable under NFL rules.

Triplette's crew was also involved in a controversial fumble recovery in a Week 4 game between the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins. On that play, line judge Sarah Thomas appeared to be looking for the ball to award possession at a time when Browns running back Duke Johnson already was holding the ball above his head.

NFL senior vice president of officiating Dean Blandino later acknowledged the "bad visual" of the call but said that Thomas saw a Redskins player recover the ball first before Johnson pulled it away. There was no evidence of that explanation on video.

Meanwhile, Triplette's crew has been responsible for six of the 11 player ejections from games this season.
Four years ago

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/...n_4386791.html

Quote:
Referee Jeff Triplette improperly awarded the Cincinnati Bengals a touchdown during Week 14 when he overturned what appeared to be a fourth-and-goal stop by the Indianapolis Colts.

“No, it wasn’t a correct call. I’ll start with that,” Blandino said on Tuesday, via National Football Post. “There was not enough evidence to overturn the ruling on the field.”

This blown call was just the latest the league has had to in recent weeks. It also wasn’t the first involving Triplette.

---

With Washington driving for a potential game-tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter, the officials moving the chains and sideline down marker improperly credited the offense with a first down although it failed to reach the required distance with a second-down catch. Rather than stop the action to correct the mistake, Triplette allowed play to continue with the Redskins believing they had secured a fresh set of downs. After an incomplete pass on the ensuing play, the down marker was then corrected.

“They couldn’t have screwed this up anymore,” NBC broadcaster Al Michael said of the ensuing confusion. “That is brutal.”
