2019 Free agency Thread

We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.

If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research.

I know, i know, we have a long way to go before the roster is final....but the point being they need at least one or two more impact players in addition to the draft.
I think it maybe getting the right players in his system that fit... it may be 2020 till the defense is the finished product.. meanwhile we need to SFC..

It won't stay that way, 4-3 LB's are generally a bargain.

Pull up Spag's defensive rankings while he was a coordinator and you'll find more bottom 10's than top 10's.

Lets not act like Spags has never fielded a 30th or worse defense before. He has.

Does that say, "he can coach up bad talent" to you?

It doesn't to me.
Yeah, I'm not gonna bother to re-litigate that with someone who thinks he has an 'ah ha' moment of some sort.

If he wants to read the thread, he can.

Spags may prove me wrong - it's happened before. But if you can honestly look at his resume and say that he's obviously a guy that's going to turn around a defense with C- talent...well you're just seeing what you want to see.

That's not what the track record says.

It's going to be hard as **** with today's rules to ever be good on defense with marginal talent.

Y'know...I'm not sure that's right.

A bunch of role players won't make this an elite defense, but it doesn't have to. The question is not whether one or two solid role players will make the difference because they won't.

But 3 or 4 could. And Veach has some capital to work with in both cap and draft picks.

The Patriots defense has little in the way of star power. But they're smart, well coached and they all played well together. They were role players that played their role.

If Veach can hit two guys in the draft and two guys in FA that can come in and be quality 'Patriot level' players in that they'll just go out there and do their !@#$ing jobs....well that's not gonna make this the '85 Bears. Or even the '18 Bears.

But when combined with the best offense in the league...well it could very easily be good enough.

Defense is about depth, desire and discipline. If Veach can take care of the first part and Spags can instill the latter 2, we can win a championship.

Anyone think we could take a cheap flyer on Corey Liuget? Coming off injury, was a pretty dominant player?

I wonder if we find a way to retain Bailey now that we have all this spare change and apparently he isn't getting insta-gobbled up?

Yes it is.

I'm not shooting for 'good' in a single offseason when we have to keep a weather eye on the horizon w/r/t to the cap.

I'm shooting for 'good enough'.

With a couple of savvy signings and a good draft, he might be able to get there. My worry right now is that Veach may not have that in his bag. And I don't think I'm setting the bar terribly high.

Don't think there's really a fit for Bailey in Spags' scheme.

Liuget and Bailey are both guys that have spent their whole careers as 3-4 ends and they'd be DT's here...not sure how that would work or if they want to do that when half the league is in 3-4.

I did NOT bitch about Ford or Houston. I did NOT just start in on Spags.

So I could not possibly care less about what 'everyone' did.

You can either speak in generalities to the wind or you can speak directly to me about what I've actually said. If you are disinclined to inform yourself as to my actual stated positions, kindly shut the **** up.

I’ve been okay with everything we’ve done so far. Not thrilled by any of it. Not excited. But I’ve been okay with it. I fully agree with you that they need some real impact player - either a pass rusher or a corner - if this is going to end up feeling good going into next year.
