"Jan, identified only by his first name, told the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper that he discovered his Indonesian wife Monica underwent a sex change after he and his son heard rumors, according to the Telegraph."

This sentence confuses me.
He heard rumors, then she had a sex change? Wouldn't her hairy bean-bag have tipped him off at some point over 19 years?

Are they saying that the wife had a sex change in Indonesia 19 over years ago? Isn't that akin to brain surgery in Manila 19 years ago?

Yeah, my read is that it had a sex change 19+ years ago... before they were married. Funny though. Sounds like he fought the GOVT on them to accept her certificate and make it all legal like, now he's fighting them again and saying "you were right 19 years ago".

It's just a poorly written sentence. They probably cut out some dangling participles or something.
