Filed to ESPN: Andrew Luck has informed the Colts he is retiring from the NFL, per source. There will be a press conference Sunday to make it official, but Luck is mentally worn down, and now checking out.

Williams is pissed because the Skins medical team is awful, which is well known.

So he says...He's really mad because he had to man up and play a power-blocking scheme and got hurt. He didn't want to come out and say it (pussy) so he attacked the medical staff (people that aren't signing 50 mil contracts).

It's interesting to think about the combined impact of money and fame on players' careers.

In the beginning, there was no money and not a lot of fame. From the 1920s through 1940s, guys played as long as they liked the game, and then they walked away to do something else for a living. You'd see guys play for five years or so and then they would go to medical school or become a lawyer or something. Football was never really a career.

Then you got into maybe the 50s through 70s where guys became famous, but they still didn't make a ton of money. There was an advantage to playing longer because fame would give you a better ability to make money in your post-football career as a contractor or a sales executive. I figure these are the guys who probably have a combination of health issues and no money to offset them.

Then you got into the big money era in the 80s through the 2000s, and there was a big advantage to playing longer, because you didn't need a post-game career. If you wanted to retire, you looked and realized you could make an extra million dollars a year, and you sighed and played another year. These guys will have health repercussions, but they (shouldn't) need money to offset them. This is where you started seeing quarterbacks playing forever.

Beginning in the late 00s and into the 2010s, we've been seeing obscene money, and we may start seeing careers shorten again. A 2nd or 3rd round pick can make enough money in two or three years to get a great head start in life, and the awareness of CTE and the plight of the Phase 2 guys above are making players think. And if they're a quarterback, they're making such obscene money that the value of playing one more year is really nothing. A quarterback in his second contract is set for life with no worries about money forever. So you may see more players taking the short career path that we've been seeing recently.

Great post.

The NFL is going to get scared now and I would guess anyone with even a hint of an injury history is going to be heavily de-graded coming into the league.

Good well thoughtout post but I gotta disagree. I dont think star QBs retiring in their prime will become the norm. It might happen here and there but Luck is just a bitch. He is an exception not the rule.

I don't know that it'll become the norm, but it's already happening and it's never happened before. The league has seen a handful of recent draft picks take their bonus and a couple of years of salary and then retire. That's unprecedented.

And a guy like Andrew Luck? He's probably got $30 to $50 million in the bank at age 29, which will give him an annual income of roughly $2 million to $3 million. He can go live on a yacht and watch hookers dance for him, or he can take blindside hits from guys like Chris Jones and Frank Clark. You can enjoy the game of football a lot and still choose to live on the yacht.

Mods, do not let Patrick Mahomes II read this post.

I think we're safe. Chris Jones and Frank Clark are on the same team as Mahomes, so they won't be allowed to put blindside hits on him.

Anyone who's had any sort of major injury understands just what kind of hell you go through to get "healthy". Most people never completely recover and will be in pain in some form for the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately for most people - they dont have the financial positions to quit their jobs and focus on their health - but if they did - many would do exactly what Luck has done. I can't imagine the sort of shit he's had to deal with given the array of injuries he's had over the years.

Its pretty obvious that Luck told the Colts months ago he was mulling retirement. Im guessing the Colts brass told him to take his time in hopes he would change his mind. He didn't and now he's being ostracized for the timing of it.
