Regardless, Smith realizes that the Chiefs could be showing interest in the former Mountaineer not because they want to use the first overall pick on him but because they hope to trade the selection to someone else. He’ll find out more when he visits the Chiefs this week.

“I hope Kansas City is legitimately interested,” Smith told Jim Corbett of USA Today. “I hope I go No. 1, but, hey, we’ll see. The Chiefs are bringing me in, so I’m going in there thinking that they’re interested [in me], because I am in them.

“I’m just going to do what I’ve always done, try and impress them, just be myself and allow the process to do it’s job and get ready for whoever drafts me. I’ll be going Monday to Friday, working out for different teams.”

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network recently reported that the Chiefs are “fascinated” with Smith, and that one scout there compares Smith to a young Donovan McNabb. The report widely is being regarded as the blowing of smoke by the Chiefs, given that G.M. John Dorsey told reporters last month that he sees no first-round quarterback prospects in the draft pool — a statement that was backed up by the Chiefs sending the second pick in round two plus a third-round pick in 2014 (which could become a second-round pick) to the 49ers for Alex Smith.

So look for the Chiefs to do their best to make Geno think that Kansas City will keep the first overall pick and use it on him. Even though all available evidence suggests that, with the trade for Smith plus a three-year, $10 million deal given to backup Chase Daniel, the Chiefs will be looking to address needs elsewhere at the top of the draft.

And they’ll be able to address even more of those needs if they can lure one of the other teams in the top 10 to pay an RG3-style ransom for the privilege of picking GS1.

Ian Rappaport is being played a fool by KC. Yeah, the Chiefs are so fascinated with Geno that they spent the entire combine talking to San Fran about trading for Smith.

it's weird

They sure are going a little far for just doing 'due diligence' or 'smokescreen'

but

Trade so much for Alex Smith only to draft his replacement at 1.1 only a month later makes little sense either. Especially considering Alex Smith just had a similar thing happen with the 49ers last year. Drafting Geno Smith basically makes Alex a lame duck QB 60 days after you gave up 2 draft picks for him.

I just don't know.

The Chiefs have plenty of options and even if they did draft Geno they'd be putting less than 20% of their cap towards QB (that's with Smith, Chase, and the 1st pick in the draft.)

Since we don't have an established QB hitting all 3 areas (trade/FA/draft) makes a lot of sense and would buy years worth of good faith for Phat Andy/Dorsey...

While I don't believe that it matters in any way, according to The Bad Guy, his source tells him the deal for Alex Smith was worked out in the week prior to the combines.

Go get the best possible back up QB available? Check

Draft the best QB prospect available? Dunno.

I don't see it happening, maybe they've decided to go overboard on the QB spot. Who knows.

At this point, staying at 1 whilst keeping Albert, there isn't a player or pick that makes any more sense than the other, unless you take Richardson or Floyd.

Based on Reids comments and what TBG has heard, it makes me wonder if the Alex Smith deal was worked out long before we thought/heard about it.

Can you ever really go overboard with the QB position? I mean - in today's league losing your franchise QB is the fastest way to end a season.

I've wanted to bring this up for a long time: why has the NFL abandoned the career b/u?

Back in the 90's you saw teams that had solid b/u QB's for 4 or 5 years. The b/u position was valued (by the HC/Org.)
