sooo, I might be moving to Kansas...
...from San Diego and was hoping to get some feedback.

I've been wanting to move to the Mid West for sometime now and think it is about time I do so.

I've been to Lawrence, Overland Park and KC a few times and like it quite a bit.

Can anyone give me a ballpark number of what the cost of a nice home is? Say 4 bedrooms, 2 baths in a nice neighborhood? What about the cost to rent a house?

Lawrence seems like a cool college town to live in. I have visited a few times there and like it.

So thats it...just looking for a change.

Lastly, does that mean I have to convert to a Chiefs fan if I move to KS?

It might not be true currently, but several years ago it was absolutely true. #2 was Orange County, as a matter of fact.

Edit: To clarify, I was thinking about early-mid 90's, so I was using "several years ago" very loosely to say the least. A quick Google search indicates that Johnson County was fallen in the ranks. Joie is more right than me.

I think it's dirt cheap to live in Johnson County if you are comparing value. I don't own my home but I've been looking at prices of home in Overland Park and they aren't too bad. Property tax isn't the best, but that's not a massive expense. I highly doubt the salaries in So Cal make up for the 1.3 million dollar shitholes in Malibu just because they are along the beach. If they were in Sherman Oaks they'd be 400K.

Property tax in JoCo is cheap compared to Wyandotte (just north of Johnson County).

I can totally understand whats going on here.

Luckily I dont have a family to support (weird saying that), but with gas at $4.55/gallon and the cost of the cheapest dirt studio, in the cheapest dirt part of town being about $800 a month, not to mention the foreclosure rate here, I see why you want to move.

I am only 22 years old, and I live w/ my Mom. I make $16.25 an hour and I CANT EVEN AFFORD MY OWN PLACE, AT $16.25 AN HOUR!!!

Good Luck in whatever you decide to do, I fear that I wont be able to live in my hometown forever because it is getting outrageous here.

I'm not doing any research on this, but that seems very unlikely. When I googled "richest (or wealthiest--I forget) counties in the country" a Wikipedia entry had Johnson County, Kansas listed at 22, per 2000 census.

Obviously statistical evidence can be manipulated any which way, so...
