Why Juan Thornhill got less snaps in LV

This sucks. Sounds like he’s not quite back to it with that knee. Not sure he’ll be as effective the rest of the season.

From Spags presser
Quote:
“Juan and I talked a week ago,” he said. “The plan was to take some snaps off of him. I think he just needs to be rested a little bit. Him and I had a conversation — in a good way. I’m saying we were trying to figure out how to get him where he was at the end of last year. This is kind of what we’ve come up with now.

“Hopefully, as we go, this thing will get back to where it was before. But we’ll just let it play itself out.”

Not sure where you'd get that he'll be less effective the rest of the season.

Sounds to me like he's hitting that wall and they've decided to scale things back a bit. It's entirely possible that getting some rest now allows him to be MORE effective later in the season.

It certainly does suck though, the guy was on a pro bowl track last year before he got hurt.

Part of it is almost surely mental. It's pretty tough, especially with your first knee injury, to have complete confidence in your knee at first. All it takes is to have some unexplained pain/swelling/whatever during/after a game or a practice to set your mind wondering if everything's really okay.

But I feel confident that eventually this season he'll be 100% back to what he was at the end of last season before he got hurt. It's just going to take a little time.

I'll bet that's some of it too. He sure does seem to play tentative at times.

Knee injuries for an athlete are pretty scary things. I was just a HS athlete for all intents and purposes when I blew out my knee, and even a year afterwards if I felt anything, even a pop with no pain, I'm sure my heartrate jumped 20 points.

For a young NFL player it has to be one of the scariest injuries around.

Another piece from Arrowhead Pride about Thornhill still battling back. Comments from Honey Badger.

“I’ve been through [an] ACL twice,” fellow safety Tyrann Mathieu told reporters on Wednesday. “I remember when I went through my ACL, it wasn’t until a year [or] two years after until I really began to feel like myself again.”

Mathieu seemed to be confirming what Reid had implied — that Thornhill needs more time to get back to his 2019 form, saying that he would counsel his young comrade to be patient.

“I think everybody’s body is different,” added Mathieu, “but I think the most important thing we all have to kind of understand is that patience. It’s going to take some time to get there — and there will be a lot of expectations from other people outside of you who want you to reach your destination quicker than [it’s] possible.”

From having been through a similar experience, Mathieu clearly feels badly that Thornhill hasn’t been seeing the same amount of work.

“Obviously it’s a challenge to begin a new role — a lesser role — to not be on the field as much, but he’s still the same guy. He’s still becoming a leader for us. He’s still very vocal on the field, on the sideline and the meeting rooms. And I think that’s all you can really ask for from a guy like that who is going through what he’s going through. He still has the same smile — has the same heart.”

Sounds like Thorny is working through it. He'll be fine. It just takes time.

Exactly. Takes a full 2yrs for the majority to recover fully and Peterson was an elite exception to the rule. You can't compare anyone to Peterson.

Sorenson is an old man, but he’s somehow still balling enough to justify a big role.
