Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus

Published: Oct. 30, 2013 at 06:39 p.m. Updated: Oct. 30, 2013 at 07:00 p.m.
An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

Now you and Saul Good are attempting to team up to question whether my post made logical sense? You guys are either wasting a vast amount of time trolling the board, or have very severe reading comprehension issues. Either option is a bit troubling.
Look, you're welcome to treat Wallace as though he has no credibility on anything because he's been a prima donna at times as a football player if you want, but I don't think that's sound logic.

Here's what happened.
  • I said that I think there's more to the Incognito/Martin harassment than meets the eye. (Specifically, I was thinking about the racist terms used in the texts/voicemails that so many people have focused on).
  • Rain Man said he thought the "more" was Incognito's character.
  • I asked if his character was what made Wallace say he respected him so much? (Again, thinking about the racism angle and how Wallace's support doesn't make sense if Incognito was harassing Martin because of his race).
  • You said you don't think Wallace can be a barometer for anything.

Now, I can understand that neither Rain Man nor you were aware of the thoughts that made Wallace's testimony seem so odd to me at the time (although I did explain them later). But your statement was so broad that it's obviously wrong (in the never say never sort of way). And you can disagree if you want, but I think it's pretty safe to say that Wallace is probably a decent barometer for whether or not a well known teammate is an out of control racist.

So anyway, it's a small thing and you were something like 6th or 7th to the party so after my initial facepalm reaction, I decided to delete it and avoid a fight. But since it was too late, now I've made an effort to explain myself to you in respectful terms. Maybe you can appreciate my position and maybe not. Hopefully we can move on to whatever the next topic is with a clean slate.

I'm no fan of Wallace or Incognito, nor do I think Wallace's positive assessment of Incognito vindicates the latter in any way. If anything, it casts an even darker shadow on Wallace in my mind.

To reference an earlier argument, I don't believe Incognito is racist but rather he was using words to purposefully hurt Martin, which is what I believe Patteu was getting at previously (please feel free to correct me) on that subject.

If Incognito was truly a racist, I doubt he'd be able to call Pouncey a "****a" and would be friends with him. Perhaps he's his generation's Daniel Day-Lewis that has sadly been working in football but I highly doubt it.

It's not that I think he's gay. I think it's a possibility because he was still apparently being harassed by teammates, including one of his offensive line mates during his 2nd year as a pro and because a cursory search didn't turn up any evidence of a significant other in his life. Also, because someone brought it up earlier in this thread.

Interesting.

I have no idea if they're available for rent. I'm sure you could find some other means via the internet to view it, if you're into that sort of thing.

Oh. Well in that case, I think he might be Muslim. He was still apparently being harassed by teammates, including one of his offensive line mates during his 2nd year as a pro and because a cursory search didn't turn up any evidence of a significant religion in his life.

I have no other reason to believe this, other than my inherent tendency to make shit up with no substantial evidence.

OK, great. That would be an interesting story too. You pursue that angle and I'll pursue this one. Let's meet back here in a couple of days and compare notes.
