One person dies in fall at Liberty Memorial in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man died Tuesday after a fall at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri.

Kansas City Police Department spokesman Capt. Tim Hernandez said the man fell around 4 p.m. and was pronounced dead on the concourse near the base of the 217-foot tower.

Hernandez said the man "had fallen or jumped off the tower."

"We are saddened and heartbroken by this tragedy," Matthew Naylor, president and CEO of the National WWI Museum and Memorial, said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the family of the individual involved who lost their life. We look to the Kansas City Police Department to conduct an investigation and share their findings."

Are the Memorial grounds still the place for . . . hedonistic rendezvous? Or is that a relic of a bygone era?

Nah, just recalling [I think I've mentioned it here before] the first time I'd ever been to the WWI Memorial.

In 8th or 9th grade, we marched in the American Royal parade [marching band]. The bus was parked at the Memorial grounds and we walked through a veritable sea of rubbers and fliers for 'hustle clubs' to board.

Lot of snickering from semi-rural adolescents.

I intended to go a few years ago, but the one day I had to do it happened to be the one day of the week that it's closed. Oh well.
