Chiefs agree to trade Alex Smith to Washington

Now you wait until March 14th for it to become official...

First of all, drafting any other first round quarterback the last 5 years would have drastically reduced the chance that we drafted Mahomes. Secondly, a winning environment has been built here in that time frame. Mahomes comes in with weapons at WR, TE, and RB, as well as a respectable offensive line. He is setup to succeed. If Mahomes turns out to be half of what we are hoping for, the next few years could be the best for this franchise since Superbowl IV. And let's not forget what we got in return for Smith. The Chiefs are primed to be a true contender for years to come. Thanks in part to them bringing in Alex Smith 5 years ago. I was frustrated with his play too. But I, for one, am glad that it worked out the way that it did. You haters need to open your eyes. You know that I'm right.
Trading for him was a cowardly move when it occurred. I get that the Chiefs scouts and Dorsey were in agreement that they weren't willing to touch a single QB in the 2013 draft. That's fine. If that's what you're actually dealt, then punt into next year. Don't give up 2 2nd rounders and hand out an extension to a guy who's never going to get the job done for you.

It's only by the grace of God that Dorsey and company fell in love with Mahomes and were able to snag a cheap trade up with Buffalo to get him before Houston, Arizona, New Orleans, and the NYG could make deals happen. Yes, Dorsey deserves 100% of the credit for making the trade up happen, but he needed a bit of luck. He needed Mahomes to last until 10, and he needed Buffalo to be stupid, AND he needed the other teams to not outsmart him at the pass. Any one of those things goes wrong and we're STILL likely saddled with Alex freakin Smith.

I'm amazed at the amount of idiots out there who think we got screwed on this trade and that getting rid of Alex was the worst thing we could do. I mean, I have friends who are fans of other teams who think that but they don't really watch the Chiefs...so I guess they get a pass. But these friggin' moron "true fan" idiots...blech...seriously, I can't stand their posts and comments.

Patty-cakes gotta light it up so I can look at these twits and just smile...

I look at it more like the Motley Crue song Don't Go Away Mad.

I knew it all along
I'd have to write this song
Too young to fall in love
Guess we knew it all along

That's alright, that's okay
We were walking through some youth
Smilin' through some pain
That's alright, that's okay
Let's turn the page

In other words, no need to be mad, just move on.

I disagree. I don't see it as cowardly as all. Smith was able to return the team to respectability and hold the reins until the right quarterback came available. The only quarterback that was worth drafting prior to Mahomes was Carr. Carr would have been nice. But I'm happy with Mahomes. We'll see who has the best career. If Mahomes is no better than average, then they probably messed up waiting so long. But if he ends up a generational talent, then it was worth every snap that Smith took.

+1, So we traded 2-2nds for a guy who played 5 years and averaged 10 wins a year, then we trade him for a starting CB and a third. Seems like a good deal. He got us to the playoffs and gave us a chance, is he Brady, Ben or Peyton? No but he also did not have a lot of weapons at wr the first several years, he is what he is a slightly above average QB. Hopefully Mahomes is well above average.

Seems like the Redskins have a bit of a Stockholm Syndrome thing going on with Reid since he's already raw dogged them once before.

Alex Smith accomplished exactly what the Chiefs wanted him to accomplish. Nobody here thought that Smith was the QB to lead this team to a championship, but he proved to be capable in leading this team to the playoffs. Mahommes is the QB to take this team to next step.

Smith was a steal for this franchise.

Cost us two second rounders up front, got a top CB and third rounder back.
For his five years years here we paid him 67 million so like 13.4 million a year. Which is not bad for a QB that started 76 games and played pretty well.

The sky is the limit with Mahommes, but Alex allowed us time to find the QB we wanted and we had decent success while we waited.
