Sounds like a question for your dentist, though O.City may be able to provide some context.

Ok, here goes. Little back ground first.
We always reccomend a crown (cap) for a tooth post endodontic treatment. When you have a root canal, you essentially take the blood supple, nerve, etc from the tooth in the pulp chamber and replace it down the center of the roots with Gutta Percha or some other material. Once you do that, you weaken the tooth kinda like pulling a leaf off a tree. Eventually, they'll get brittle. Depending on which tooth and how much access the dentist had to do to do the root canal, I recommend a crown. Anterior teeth you can usually access small as they only have a single canal, posterior teeth have multiple canal systems that vary so you need more access to find all the anatomy. You should be fine for a bit. I usually try to wait post root canal a few weeks to make sure the tooth is stable and pain free before we put a crown on. Patients don't like having to drill a hole in that expensive crowm we just did to re do endo. Your risk would be you bite down on something, split the tooth and it's now nonrestorable and you are getting an implant. |

I just had a root canal and crown a bit ago. They put a temporary crown on immediately after the RC. Then I got the permanent crown 3 weeks after that. I would ask for the temp crown before vacation, but that's not coming from anything other than what I experienced.

Point of reference from my true story:
I had a root canal 25-28 years ago. I never got a crown and 6 years ago the filling in the tooth began to fall apart. A bagel began the fail. 3 years ago the tooth began to fall apart and about 1 year later it sheared off at the root. For the last 3 1/2 years I have a missing top of the tooth and a sharp piece of the root just above the gum line. That's why O City is telling you a crown is a wise choice.
