In a functional franchise, you get input from every coach to base decisions on.

Where is the evidence this is a functional franchise?

I may be foolishly holding out hope, but Pioli sounded uncomfortable on the radio even saying Cassel is the QB next season. I think Crennel doesn't want Cassel, or at least wants someone to compete with him.

I believe it was more about Robinson being out than excitement for Gun. I hoped he could reclaim his defensive glory and attack mode defense, but yes in the end you get Tom Brady and a cast of All Pro offense players and the OC can just put down his mike and eat nachos.

I really dislike this hire, and I'm hoping I'm wrong. We throw up a stinker this year and I think Hunt will have no choice but to start over from scratch. Meaning Cassel, Pioli and Romeo are almost certainly all gone. This utter refusal to step outside of the comfort zone just makes me sick, and I think it is clear now that "competition" was something they said to try and appease the fanbase. It's clear by bringing in this waste of space that we are trying to coach to Cassel's ability which means I think we'll draft at least two people who can run the five yard hitch route...because that is about where Cassel's arm strength and accuracy top out.

I think that's about right. Cassel-friendly OC. I take it Jackson and Saunders said they didn't want Cassel and would prefer Orton if anything.

To look at the massive distinctions in offenses in this league and try to argue that coordinators don't make a difference is silly.

Are you really telling me that the Saints and Packers don't have systems in place that get 110% out of their talent? Or do you really think that Matt Flynn (who didn't have Greg Jennings at the time, mind you) is one of the best QBs in the league.

I'm not saying that a coordinator will make something from nothing - but I am saying that he didn't exactly have nothing in Miami. I'm further saying that the difference between success and failure in the NFL is decided in the margins. Parity makes every single bit of added talent exponentially more critical.

It's not like a team needs to be 50% better than its opponent to win. If one team gets 110% from its talent where another only gets 90% from its, the former team is going to blast the latter a great deal of the time.

I see nothing to suggest that this guy is someone that's going to get 110% from his talent - he never has before. At best, he's just another guy. And if he's just another guy, he was hired because he wouldn't buck the trend w/ Cassel.

As to career suicide? The dude's unemployed. He was probably going to end up back at QB coach if Pioli didn't hire him on. NFL coordinators usually only ascend or descend; not hold steady. Well he's damn sure not ascending. WTF did he have to lose?

Actually, if Cassel's accuracy extended to 5 yards, McCluster might have been a more credible weapon over the season and a half that he played with Cassel.

I think he (McCluster) made more plays in 3 games with Orton at QB than he did with Cassel in 20+games.

Sure you get input, but the HC is gonna go with who he wants regardless, we're acting like if the OC only hated Cassel he'd get his way.

I totally understand the hire. Just more Ex-Patriot BS. I too feel it's a BIG mistake - on Par with most other big Pioli decisions.

First round - RT to make Cassel look better this year and possibly replace Albert before they have to pay him (afterall, need that money for Matty's extension).

Second round - CB to replace Carr because they aren't going to risk losing Bowe and taking away Matty's security blanket, so they'll need to use the tag on him.

Just try to figure out what can be done to help drag Cassel into the ranks of the mediocre and you can probably guess what the franchise will do.
