I'd like to see the look on Andy's face when Thompson chopped down that free rusher that probably had a 100 lbs on him. He earned some playing time right there. Should finish #2 in RB snaps this season by a good margin.

Veach should trade him to the Bengals for a draft pick.

When you saw the difference between Smith and Marshall/Caldwell you realized just how high a hill Smith has to climb.

The two far less physically gifted RBs simply looked like RBs - Smith looked like a fast guy they handed the football to.

There's no way this can keep going forward. He's simply not going to be able to make this transition. Best case scenario is that he makes a practice squad but I figure his return skills will see someone picking him up. There are too many teams that will struggle to find 53 guys that can contribute ANYTHING for him to not make a team somewhere.

I agree that he's not a bellcow back but I think he can lead a platoon situation at maybe 13-15 carries/gm.

What will be key is his ability to avoid direct shots; maintain his angles and keep his pad level low. He can do a lot to protect himself and stay more durable than I think we'd have initially believed.
Darren Sproles is a great comparison. I also see some MJD in the size/balance/strength combo.

I think he’s a dynamite weapon that you can use to grind tough yards out of shotgun sets, and he should actually be dynamite in short yardage. Small, strong, shifty. That’s a good combo

I’ve always kind of wondered why in short yardage guys wanna bring more guys in there and go with a big back that can’t make people miss

Spread them out and give it to a guy that makes people miss or breaks tackles. Charles was always a good short yardage back imo

He's trying to read the blocks and see the holes.

A good RB will just innately feel them. He'll recognize that they're opening before they are and hit them just as they become available.

Smith will see them, move towards them and then they close before he gets there. That's the thin line between success and failure at RB and I just don't think he'll be able to get there in 4 friggen weeks (because...well...duh)

Slow evolution, IMO.

In ye olden days you could try to spread out and opposing defense just didn't care much. They were still gonna play run first and dare you to beat them. And QBs just weren't as precise, timing offenses weren't as dialed in and mistakes down there were common so coaches were still loathe to throw the ball.

With the rise of the short passing game as an extension of the running game, more and more teams are willing to do exactly what you're suggesting. Now that the pass is a real threat, the opposing D has to actually adjust to it and you can actually get that space inside by spreading the D out for a handoff.

It just took a more reliable sort of passing game to convince coaches that throwing it was an acceptable risk. Once they did defenses responded accordingly and now offenses are slowly adjusting back by doing exactly what you're suggesting.
