the NBA drafts off potential. Doke is going to eventually be a force in the NBA. Remember he’s only been playing basketball for 7 years. I think he leaves and gets drafted.

That would be the best shot at a guy bolting but after the Poke-a-Doke fiasco I don’t know.

I'm not so sure about that. Doke was born in the wrong decade. The NBA doesn't value the bruising type of centers anymore. They want athletic guys who can defend the pick-and-roll and can shoot enough to draw defenders away from the hoop. Doke does none of those, and isn't even close.

I just don't see him ever being anything in the NBA. He is the complete opposite of what the NBA wants. He can't shoot, can't defend multiple positions, doesnt rebound well, doesn't block shots well and is really slow. If it was 20 years ago and you needed to guard Shaq, he would be interesting to an NBA team. How would Doke ever play against the Warriors? Withey is a better player in almost every way and isn't much in the NBA. I think there is a good reason no mock drafts have Doke going anywhere.

embid wasn’t exactly a monster at KU and then he got hurt. Still got drafted high. I’m not saying Doke as talented as Embid, but he will get drafted.

Go look at the thread during Embid’s year, many were saying no way Embid was going to be drafted. He needs another year. Just saying.

Embiid was a monster during our 7-0 stretch in Big 12 play. His play in Ames was otherworldly. It's what elevated him to a lottery pick.

Without him, the streak falls.

A little break from the norm

An excerpt from the book Beyond The Streak:

2007-2008: THE ULTIMATE PAYOFF
Jeremy Case: That summer...we were going so hard against each other that it caused a little tension. There were a lot of arguments, a lot of fights...

Sherron Collins: We were playing pickup and Darnell and Russ were arguing...and then D-Block started making fun of Russ. He said he wasn't a true New Yorker, that he was from the suburbs. That pissed Russ off.

Jeremy Case: Russ found a line on the court and told Darnell, " C'mon...cross this line right here. I dare you to cross it." So Darnell crossed the line and swung at Russ. He missed, and then Russ swung back and caught him right in the jaw. Darnell stumbled back a little and then we broke it up...

Tyrel Reed: Darnell didn't go to the floor, but Russ definitely staggered him. Russ started running around (celebrating) and pickup was done.

That cracked me up. I knew Russel Robinson was a tough SOB but I didn't know he was that tough. I mean, Darnell was a big man. That whole team was tough. There's some other stuff like that about Sherron and Sasha.

Embiid was a hot mess at the beginning but every game he’d unveil some new aspect of his game and wouldn’t ever make the same mistake twice. By the middle of league it was obvious he was a savant and was gone.

I always thought if it ever devolved to fisticuffs I wanted Darnell. I guess not. LOL

I personally thought Embiid was a better prospect than Wiggins in December/January that year. He's one of the most talented basketball players I've ever seen and that was obvious even then.

I don't think this is correct at all. I clearly remember people were thinking he may go #1 overall even with the injury.

There is no comparison between Doke and Embiid. Doke has size and a very quick take off. Embiid is a transcendent, once-in-a-generation talent.

For what it's worth, I do think Doke will end up in the NBA, but he's at KU for at least 3 years. Most likely all four, though.

My opinion of Udoka has gone down some this year, but it has to be remembered how young he is still (turned 18 only 3 months ago). He's still young enough that he could develop every part of his game significantly (including shooting) over the next couple of years. Definitely looks like he could be here all four years, though.

KU should have plenty of depth in the front court next year. With the Lawson brothers who averaged basically a combined 33/18 together their last year in Memphis. Then add in De Sousa with a full offseason to work on his game. Azubuike isn't going anywhere. Plus freshman David McCormack. Oh and Lightfoot as well. Someone will probably have to redshirt next year.
Despite that talk earlier in the season about getting drafted, Vick isn't going anywhere next year either BTW (if he wants to be drafted anyway). Not that I'm entirely enthused about that considering all of his flaws.

But it’s still remarkable to me. I’m all about skilled big guys that can shoot and dribble and what that does to the defense. But at the same time a big guy in the lane with his back to the basket is still a very efficient look with a tiny bit of skill.
NBA moves away from back to the basket post games more and more every year. The only team that does it significantly these days is probably the 76ers with Embiid. It's just so much easier for teams to get a good look at a 40% chance at a 3PT (1.2 points per possession) than a 50-55% chance at a contested 2 pointer going down (1.0-1.1 points per possession)

The Raptors have a big named Jonas Valanciunas who has one of the best post games in the NBA (shoots around 60% from 0-10 feet), but he barely plays in crunch time and is hardly utilized as an offensive player at all. He came up in the wrong era. Could be the same for Udoka too.
