Start Up Keeper League w/ the 3rd overall pick

I'm basically choosing between one of these guys:

Najee Harris
Javonte Williams
Justin Jefferson
Ja'Marr Chase

It's just HPPR, which makes it kind of difficult to pass on a young potentially elite RB.

I know many will say Najee is a no-brainer, but he's already 24 years old (just 2 years younger than McCaffrey for perspective).

Meanwhile, Javonte Williams is only 22 years old. 2 years is a lot in RB years.

I'm very conflicted on what to do here.

RBs have such a short shelf life. Is there a keeper penalty? If not, I think I'd go with Chase. He's gonna be a monster for a decade, IMO.

No, you just have to keep 1 after year 1, 2 after year 2, etc. until the maximum/minimum of 4 after year 4.

I'm very tempted to just take one of the WRs for the reason you've given, wish it were full PPR though.

Yeah - and WR seems to have some depth to it.

You're just really spinning the wheel and taking your chances when it comes to RBs being around more than 3-4 seasons. I mean even someone as 'obvious' as Zeke was pretty average by his 4th year in the league.

3 WR league or 2? 1 flex?

Chase is 22 yrs old and didn't even play football in the COVID year. What he did last season was not only his first year at that level, but after taking a year off.

I just don't see any way he's not the biggest of big swinging dicks for the foreseeable future. Jefferson will be a very good player for a very long time but Ja'Marr just has HoF written all over him, IMO. And with no keeper penalty, you have him for as long as you want him at no cost.

I just couldn't bring myself to pass on that for someone like Harris or Williams when those guys are just an OC change or lower body injury away from being nominalized.

2 WRs 1 flex.

The thing I like about Chase over Jefferson too is that Chase is attached to Burrow. Jefferson could easily lose Cousins sione and be in Metcalf territory.

That security and stability at the QB position alone gives him the edge.

That's assuming the Bengals have enough cash to put in escrow to cover burrow and chase mega deals in the future.

Only 2 WRs does complicate it a little. 3 WRs and it's Chase without blinking.

2 and I think I'd still lean that direction, but it's closer. It just makes the pool a lot deeper for guys you can get in the margins. Especially in a .5 PPR.

I think I'd definitely narrow it down to Chase and Harris at that point. From there, I leave it to you sir. But I'm pretty sure I'd go Chase. If y'all are only keeping 1 this off-season, the absolutely best and brightest keeper possible is the most valuable long-term asset. I think that's gonna be Chase if you weigh the floor vs. the ceiling.

Even in half PPR, it seems like an elite WR is going to be a lot more valuable than most any RB. Williams had quite a few receptions last year but he still has to put up a lot of production just to catch Chase in non-PPR production. I don't think I could go against Chase in this case.

I ended up going with Chase. Thanks for the input guys

At the end of the day, I've been burned by RBs in keeper leagues ever since I owned Gurley and he fell of a cliff. I've always been a RB in the 1st 99% of the time guy, and still am for redraft. But it's time for a change of pace since I basically had my pick after JT, and I'm going with the elite WR in a perfect situation.
