I'm going with on the field simply because if the accident is caused by being a dumbass it's really hard for me to find pity for them.

I would say the guy who just hangs on too long.

If injury ends their career when they still have the ability, at least they went out when they could still do it, in a way.

Nothing sadder than an old hero who didn't know when to hang 'em up.

For me, an accident. Specifically, ending up dying in a hospital bed from injuries caused by a meaningless auto accident because they didn't bother to wear a seat belt when the roads were icy.

It cost this team one of the greatest linebackers ever. That's why it's the worst in my book.

True. One of the most tragic things I've ever witnessed was Johnny Unitas wearing a Chargers Uniform.

What he said. Been thinking about it all day, too, after Rothlisberger's accident.

Who was the running back drafted to be in the NFL then received a career ending injury in a flag football game for NFL rookies.

I’d have to say that would be the most devastating to me. To make it to that point then have it taken away in such a trivial manner.
