Help me out - Types of wood siding

There is one spot on my house siding that is rotting that I want to try to repair this week, but I'm not sure what type of siding it would be called to figure out where to go and get more of it to match the rest of the house.

It isn't siding like you typically see, (and that I found lots of on google) with horizontal boards overlapping each other, it is more of a large board like a piece of plywood that is shaped on the finished side to look like larger (like a couple feet) overlaps.

I was going to go to Lowes and just ask there or wander around, but I was going to try to do some research first to know what to look for and wondered if anyone might know what I'm talking about to help put a name to what I'm looking for.

As for the repair, I am hoping I can just find an existing seam, remove the panel or two that has the rot in it, cut one to fit back in (since it is between two windows, one directly above the other) nail it back in, seal the joint with silicone, and then prime and paint the new one. I am hoping the rot is only in the panel itself, else things might get a lot more complitcated on me.

Anyhow, thanks for any thoughts on what kind of siding this would be called, and for any other tips that might come to mind for anyone that has done this before.

It's crap. Garbage. Dave is right. Put on some Hardy siding.

I know a mediocre contractor.

It looks like the siding was stressed between the windows because the material on either side of the windows did not line up quite right. The installers ended up forcing the runs between the windows into place and nailing it, over time that stress made it crack in the middle.

Look right above the crack, it's water stained. This stuff fails miserably when it gets wet, I see it all the time.

Yup. I can tell just by looking it's not flashed properly. That finial piece up top precludes it, but gosh, doesn't it look pretty? Bet he's got some water damage under the trim too.

The nails are going to be hidden under the lap. A flat pry bar (like a Stanley Wonder Bar) can be slid behind the siding then you can bend the nail out by beating on it with a hammer. You will have to face nail the last piece of replacement siding, but good nails and a little caulking will make that OK.

I had this exact same thing happen on my house 4 years ago. Windows were contractor grade and we ended up replacing them.

OSB board under both windows we replaced was largely gone (rotten).

We ended up replacing with more smart board siding, but only because we couldn't afford to re-side the whole front of the house at the time.

I have a much better idea what to look for in a house the next go around.

Ugh, sounding like something I can't do without fixing or risk it getting really really bad, but there is a lot going on so I'm not sure if I can do it myself, but I can't really afford paying for a full blown contractor that would know how to do it right...not even taking into account possibly finding out my windows are rotting out and have to be replaced.

I should have just started drinking instead of trying to figure it out :P

I want to get in there and take it out to try to find out what I am up against, but I'm worried how bad it will turn out to be and then be betweetn a rock and hard place even more.

Just hang one of those big blue tarps over the window and take care of it in a couple years.

Heh. Seriously though - you need help, hit me up. I'll present you with 4 or 5 different options. I've done repairs on a budget before. It doesn't cost much for me to come out and pull some boards off to determine the extent of it.

I'm just gonna duck tape it over real good. It'l hold.

Do you have a wait list or anything like that? Or how would we get the ball rolling? My wife said she'd rather not see the front of the house rot off this year.

The same response can be applied to both your siding and your wife: OPEN IT UP! You only have a few days to do it!
