If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

This is more of why I'm expecting bigger things than "8-8 and sniffing the playoffs".

Yeah, it's a new system etc, but they are also keeping a similiar defensive system and our new QB is supposedly a very smart vet. Shouldn't take him much time.

But I also don't view last years team as a normal 2-14 team.

Truth. Yep, the enemy of the Chiefs seems to be a handful or so of Chiefs fans.

I've owned my fails on this board ever since I got here. If Stanzis career ends without him earning a chance to play, so be it. I advocated for spending a late second on the guy and it is what it is. A swing and a miss.

I love how you try to act as if Genos career is over, though.

Time will tell how that decisions ends up.

Let's look back in 4 years and see who made the better decisions.

Alex was on the 49ers roster for 8 full seasons. 8 x 16 = 128 games

Alex played in 80 games.

2005, Alex played 9 games missing 7 to injury.
2006, Alex played 16 games, missing 0.
2007, Alex played 7 games, missing 9 to injury.

2008, Alex played 0 games, missing 16 to injury.
2009, Alex played 11 games, missing 0 to injury, but was benched for 5 games.
2010, Alex played 11 games, missing 2 to injury, but was benched for 3 games.
2011, Alex played all 16 games.
2012, Alex played 7 games, missing 2 to injury, but was benched for 7 games.

Out of 128 games...
Alex played 77 games.
Alex missed 36 games to injury.
Alex was benched for 15 games.

Alex was benched for 15 games, so that is like losing an entire season, from 8 down to 7.

So durability wise, Alex played 77 games in 7 seasons = 11.0 games/year.

Including injury and benching, Alex played 77 games in 8 seasons = 936 games/year. I will correct my list...
**** all that nonsense.

Alex Smith started a grand total of 75 games for the 49ers according to profootballreference

That's only 58% of the games played by the 49ers since he was drafted.

I don't care about the reasons.

Being effective when healthy is part of availability.

Yeah so that's why you have over 200 posts on here talking about Alex Smith because you're tired of hearing about him right? You pathetic old man you need this debate to give you something to do. My goodness you're a loser, you're a 54 year old man that started an online fan club for Kaepernick, no one likes you or your stupid ass "Homers for Kaepernick" garbage on the Niners forum. If this is how I spend my time in 30 years when I'm your age I hope someone would put me out of my misery.

I don't necessarily know if the old was complete shit or it was a top down negativity that destroyed the team chemistry.

Ever work for a company/boss that was just a complete jagoff? Everyone seems to suck all that much more. Change the boss with someone people respect and want to work for and it's amazing how much better everyone becomes at their job.

Peeholi and his despotic attitude was incredibly detrimental to this team. And, at least with Haley, the players knew that the coach had their back even if he was a raging lunatic with low head coaching skills. Crennel just didn't give a rats ass and let Pioli control the franchise and team.

And you had guys like Brian Daboll, who had absolutely no business being in this business.

Simply by having Dorsey and Reid as GM and Head Coach, you'll see a +4/5 game win increase. Just because they aren't Peeholi. You'll see another +3/4 win increase due to the very good coaching staff that they've assembled to go along with a pretty talented roster.

This team will be competitive. This team will challenge for the AFC West division title.

9 or 10 wins is definitely not out of the realm of possibilities to go along with a first round playoff victory.

While Alex Smith isn't the end all, be all of NFL QB's, he will perform well in a ball/clock control West Coast type of offense enabling our defense to remain effective through a full game. You let Charles work behind that offensive line, run good, high percentage receiving routes and let that defense absolutely tee off on the opposing QB like it should. How many real opportunities did Hali and Houston get last year? Not much and they still racked up 9 and 10 sacks respectively when they were basically defending the run for 70% of the time as the Chiefs were so farging behind so quickly in every game all season long.

It's going to be a completely different animal this next season.

After 2-14 and the worst team in the history of the Chiefs 8-8 would not be a failure - it would be a good first step. Anyone that expects much more under the circumstances is completely unrealistic. Delusional even.
