2) He was used as a situational pass rush specialist when he WAS actually healthy because he's bitchmade and a giant run game liability

3) The 49ers quickly realized 1 and 2 are not going away and now are frantically trying to dump him (you could argue Bitchmade already has cost them Deforest Buckner, a much better player)

4) The Chiefs were better without him, by a lot
Duncan - I've honestly wondered if good coaching could remove Dee entirely from the 9ers defense. Is his success as a pass rusher because he's truly talented as a rusher or could he be mitigated with constant chips from a running back and a tight end?

From the moment the 9ers won, you predicted Dee would be a non-factor due to constant chips from Kelce and Williams and that you doubted the Chiefs staff was concerned about him at all. Damn, you called it. He was erased in the Super Bowl. I'm trying to figure out how much of that is due to Schwartz being elite (the all 22 is amazing, Dee wouldn't even engage Schwartz when the 9ers were up 10), or if the Chiefs had a blueprint for all other teams to erase Dee's effectiveness (he got chipped constantly off the line and seemed to give up on the rush the moment he got that contact. It always seemed like great coaches like Belichick had zero issues with Dee either.

I think I’m the SB it was more about Schwartz. I wasn’t expecting San Francisco to move Bosa to RE exclusively. That was good coaching (though one can wonder if Bosa might have been more effective against Schwartz, and Ford somewhat of a factor against Fisher).

I don’t remember them chipping at Bitchmade much. They chipped Bosa a lot, or tried to, it seemed like.

Blake Bell would typically throw Dee inside against Schwartz off the line when he was in. Perhaps I conflated Williams' chips against Bosa and assumed he chipped Ford off the line too. When Bell was in, he'd hit Dee immediately and Dee would then (despite being thrown inside) try to circle around Mitchell on the outside (without contact). It's possible Ford's responsibility was simply to contain Mahomes in the pocket on these plays, but if it was, it certainly wasn't effective in the 4th quarter.

Massive ouch right there. This feels similar to Donovan McNabb and Alex Smith. Reid and Veach dumped both of them on the Redskins at the perfect moment.

If it's the same thing as before (and I'm guessing it is), he had a lumbar discectomy in January of 2018. That was his SECOND back surgery - he first had surgery on his lower back in 2011.

They weren't even sure he'd be able to walk there for a while. They were concerned he'd have permanent loss of sensation in his extremities.

It's just like I said when people wanted to tag him - the dude is broken and has been since college. He is what he is.

We’ve won a lot of them lately:

Trading down for Jones
Trading up for Mahomes
Unloading Dee Ford
Eric Murray for Emmanuel Ogbah
Trading for Charvarious Ward
Trading for Frank Clark

Those are some big wins. We wouldn’t undo any of those.

A chronic lower back injury might also explain why he struggles so much with lower body injuries. I was born missing a piece of a right side of a vertebrae in my lower back and it’s given me a herniated disc in a different part of my back and my doctors think it caused my left knee injury due to overcompensation. I’m amazed he’s been able to have the career he’s had with an injury like that, and it also explains his aversion to contact and his tendency to run around blockers to the QB.

Does not explain the offsides, though. ****

In one of my many Super Bowl re-watchings, I concentrated on Dee Ford. He avoids contact more avidly than ET the Extraterrestrial.
