Chiefs agree to trade Alex Smith to Washington

Quarterback Alex Smith has a new home, as sources tell The Star that the Chiefs have reached agreement to trade their veteran starter of the last five seasons to Washington.

There is no word on the compensation yet, and any trade involving Smith can’t be completed until the first day of the new league year,

which begins at 3 p.m. on March 14. But the sources say the deal is in place and will proceed.


Smith, 33, is coming off a stellar season in which he set career-highs in passing yards (4,042), touchdowns (26) and passer rating (104.7).

However, Smith was entering the final year of his contract with the Chiefs, and he has a cap number of $20.6 million for 2018. By trading

him, the club stands to save $17 million.

The deal also clears the way for 2017 first-round draft pick Patrick Mahomes to become the Chiefs’ new starting quarterback. Mahomes’ regular-season NFL debut, a 27-24 win over the Denver Broncos on Dec. 31, was a success.

Mahomes completed 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards with an interception in the game and showed poise while leading the Chiefs’ game-winning drive.

“I think he’s got what it takes man,” Denver cornerback Aqib Talib said at the Pro Bowl. “He’s got a super strong arm, he can make all

the throws. He made great reads in our game. I know we had a simple game plan on defense, but he made great reads and took control of the

game.”

Smith was acquired from San Francisco in 2013 for two third-round picks. He posted a 50-26 record as a starter since arriving in

Kansas City and has made two straight Pro Bowl appearances.

We just got a mid 3rd and a young 1st round talent CB with two years left on his rookie deal who was the best nickel corner in the NFL last year. We saved a **** ton of cap room, AND we get to start our young 1st round guy at QB.

ALL for a 34 year old conservative game manager QB with only one year left on his deal.

I'm gonna still be doing my happy dance clear into August on this one. I'm celebrating.

Geno argument? Please regale us on how amazing Fisher has been. If memory serves me right, he was a bottom 10 Offensive tackle his first two years, was almost moved to right tackle, and continues to be mediocre to average. I get it, Geno Smith sucks ass, but drafting him would have at least been an attempt at moving the franchise forward with the blueprint for actual playoff success. Instead, we still wasted 5 years of time with a retread QB, who we dumped anyways. And you stanning for a QB who is not going to be with our organization is just as pathetic as what you are trying to paint me as.

I would understand the regular season win angle, if Smith was at least an entertaining QB to watch. But the dude is the Toyota Camry of QBs. Just an appliance with no excitement.

If Kansas City had the fewest drops in the league, perhaps it's because Alex Smith chooses to run into the arms of waiting defensive linemen while there is no pressure.

Can't drop them if you don't throw them.

But Alex and I are 100% in agreement: I, too, am jacked that he's going to Washington.

Smith said on the Murph & Mac podcast last week that he and his wife have already been scouting out possible places to live once he’s officially a member of the Redskins.

Smith will be playing his 13th NFL season in 2018 and he’s heard from people who think he is on the back end of his playing career. Smith, who stands to make up to $94 million under the terms of his proposed extension, does not feel that way and said he “can’t see the horizon at this point.” A good first season with his new team will likely push thoughts of retirement over the horizon for others as well.

I just don't understand the continued loathing of Smith. The process worked, and he was a big part of the process. Had we drafted Geno Smith, Johnny Manziel, or Paxton Lynch, who are all colossal busts, would this team be in the enviable position that it's in now? I highly doubt it. First of all, drafting any other first round quarterback the last 5 years would have drastically reduced the chance that we drafted Mahomes. Secondly, a winning environment has been built here in that time frame. Mahomes comes in with weapons at WR, TE, and RB, as well as a respectable offensive line. He is setup to succeed. If Mahomes turns out to be half of what we are hoping for, the next few years could be the best for this franchise since Superbowl IV. And let's not forget what we got in return for Smith. The Chiefs are primed to be a true contender for years to come. Thanks in part to them bringing in Alex Smith 5 years ago. I was frustrated with his play too. But I, for one, am glad that it worked out the way that it did. You haters need to open your eyes. You know that I'm right.
