I got a copy from ebay for $5. Been using for over a year now with no issues.

Don't. OpenOffice will open and save to all the same formats.

I got a copy from AppSute. Was very wary, but it worked and I didn't get the plague.

Do you actually need the full desktop version? Microsoft Office Online is free for home users.

OpenOffice cannot save a file in .docx format. Which is what MS Office currently uses. You can edit an existing one though. And you can save a file in .doc format. Which can be opened by Office. But .doc lacks a bunch of the newest features. So if you deal with others that save and edit in the .docx format, you're going to be missing some functionality. If you edit their .docx and save it as .doc, you also could break the previous user's formatting.

Also... Microsoft Office is now on a subscription service. You pay monthly/yearly. You can still buy older versions though that aren't subscription based. But going forward you won't be able to.

You can still buy a non-subscription version of office for $150 I think. That’s word, Ppt, and excel.

Are you or is anyone you know a student? Office 360 subscription is usually free with an .edu address.
