It actually makes him look less guilty as the driver. He most likely had to purchase the supplemental insurance that was only good on him being the driver. If he is offering to pay for the vehicle he may be indicating he wasn't driving(wink wink)... Long ways to go before we know the details.

You have an unrealistic view of the situation. There is not going to be any serious charges and if you are in a contract like a leasing agreement or insurance policy, you have duties spelled out to notify and be truthful.

Why the **** would a guy with a lawyer decide to breach contracts that provide some financial cover because he is worried about some nickle and dime driving like an asshole case?

Lying is the one thing that will get him in the most trouble so doing that isn't the worst thing. At this point they know he was there anyway may as well come clean and deal with what he deserves to deal with. Actions have consequences.
