Junior Seau Dead Cops Investigating Shooting

Cops are currently at Seau's home just outside San Diego. Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.

Seau was a beast in the NFL -- skyrocketing to fame thanks to his explosive play with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. The USC standout was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1990 and played in the league for 20 years.

Seau was involved in a car accident back in 2010 when he drove his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA hours after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Seau later said he was not trying to kill himself ... insisting he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

I once spent more than an hour on the phone trying to talk someone I was very close to out of suicide. She wouldn't tell me where she was. She took a full bottle of prescription sedatives. I listened to her get to where her speech was so slurred I could barely understand her. After she was so out of it she thought it was too late to save her she told me where she was. I was able to call 911 on my cell while still talking to her on the landline. She was unconscious when they got there. At the emergency room they couldn't tell me for hours if she would live. It was a very close call, but she did live.

In better times she was as rational as anyone. At the time of the suicide attempt she was beyond all reason. She was a completely different person. Until you have seen this for yourself it is hard to understand.

I hope you have enough humanity to try to understand that when they are in that condition they are nothing like the rational person they usually are. If you are unable to try to see that and try to have some empathy and understanding, try to have some humanity, then **** you, you truly are an asshole.

That's the catch. Yeah there is a selfish side to it. Then there's a side to it where anyone who has the ability to stick a gun to themselves and pull the trigger is obviously suffering some sort of severe mental problem. I don't understand how people argue otherwise. There is nothing about this that should be considered normal behavior.

You do make a good point here. There is a fine line between crazy and selfish, and I've conceded that I'm, reluctantly, willing to overlook crazy.

However, although I agree you have to be "off" to kill yourself, I wont say thats enough for me to give someone a pass.

The problem here is eliminating the possibility that ego played a role. I can envision someone (Donald Trump) falling into financial ruin, and they are so damned self-centered that their family's potential misery is overwhelmed by their own financial, moral, or reputational standing, and they can't see that life is worth living because of how bad they'd feel, without a thought for how sad everyone else would be. To hell with those people. I want true, rare, genuine, drooling crazy.

The fact that Seau recently came into financial difficulty doesn't help, if someone wants to argue his depression was sparked by his financial problems, thats only going to harden my heart, because that points to an ego-driven person staring into his downfall, without a care in the world for his mother's tears, not willing to live through it.

sounds like an ego-driven person who wants to hear someone say she mattered, someone to stroke her ego. Otherwise she would have told you nothing.

I hope her parents are not alive and she's an only child, because at least then I could say that she wasn't a heartless bitch who couldn't care less about breaking her immediate family's heart for the sake of her damned ego.

No, you have no idea. And that is the problem. All of you assume you understand, but you don't. It had nothing to do with ego.

Um. Not to really nitpick or anything but how am I or anybody else participating supposed to be empathetic to a person who committed suicide? I get it. You care about somebody who had a close call. You're passionate about it. You're angry with me because I have a different opinion. Grow up and understand the people view things differently. Your opinion is great. I've gone out of my way and made myself look foolish on this very site trying to prevent people from hurting themselves. So I guess you don't really know me at all. It isn't about opinion, it is about mental illness. You can have an opinion that the people committing suicide are just whiners and not mentally ill, but you are WRONG. It is a medical fact, not an opinion. So have your opinion, but know your opinion is wrong. It is like having the opinion that the sky is green.

Junior was coherant before his death. He wasn't ready to be fitted for a straight-jacket. Depression is not an excuse, if being depressed quashes any concern someone might have for their broken-hearted family, then they were a horrible person.

Well, I don't know you, of course, except from what I see here, and of course we each have our own opinions (that's a good thing, actually). What you've been saying for the past couple of pages makes me think that you haven't really lived with someone who has serious, chronic, clinical depression, and maybe you don't have a full grasp of it.

Which is fine, unless a) you exhibit this level of vehemence towards someone who is suffering badly from it, or b) you have to live with it yourself sometime in the future. I hope neither happens, but my advice to you is to ease up on the outright dismissal of its severity a little, and maybe soak in a little of what everyone else in this thread is saying.

If you came out of D.C. more often you're realize I'm not inhumane. I refuse to accept suicide as an option for anybody in my circle. I think that's a pretty good standard to set. I mean, if you're okay with it or choose to accept somebody choking on a revolver, that's your business. I disagree. I'm not going to apologize for having a position.

Is that really what our only options are, here? I had an uncle commit suicide two years ago, and although I don't "accept" it, I know that in the last days, he was not the same person I had grown up knowing. He was not himself.
