NFL is Rigged: Week 18 edition

The CP consensus is that the NFL is rigged. Welp, as such, I think it’d be great to discuss this week’s script.

The NFL is rigged, so this should be easy. As easy as predicting a WWE In-Ring interview being rudely interrupted by a rival with a steel chair.

Call your shot, what kind of week 18 shenanigans is the NFL up to?

Las Vegas vs L.A: Which new stadium does the NFL prefer? TWO teams in L.A make the playoffs?

Will the NFL write in a tie game sending BOTH to the playoffs?

Will they sneak the Steelers in for one last hoorah for Ruthlessraper?

Or will they write in Lamar Jackson because he generates ratings?

Will they give the most prestigious player (Mahomes) the #1 seed, or do they want to see the Chiefs in the WC round for extra ratings?

It's mind boggling to me with the money involved in this whole thing that some people actually still believe there are a bunch of choir boys running the show that wouldn't dictate certain results if they see a reason to. It's not like the players and coaches are involved and given some kind of script like it's a damn movie. Nobody is saying that, or if they have, they're taking it too far.

As with much of life, very few things are black and white, there is mostly gray area. As usual though, you're just called a "conspiracy nutter" if you don't believe the exact narrative you're being fed. Most of the time, almost always actually, the truth lies somewhere in between.
There were predictions earlier this season saying the NFL will keep teams close in the standings (shocker, the standings are always close), then when that one upset weekend happened (Jags beat the Bills, among several others), apparently that was "proof".

Except I never saw a dissertation on how that was accomplished across so many games in a week, except if coaches and players were in on it..... and not to say that's the theory, but just goes to show how much disconnect there is between "what the NFL wants to happen" and actually being able to explain it in terms of the calls on the field (outside of the purely reactionary stuff).

But, outside of steering Vegas, I'm not sure I really get the whole "follow the money" thing for steering games.... TV contracts are made for years in advance, playoff games are always sold out, stadiums that do well typically always do well, season tickets and renewals are probably pretty steady and would take years of suck to change.

If someone said the Saints won the SB after Katrina because it's WWF entertainment and a great storyline, I get that logic..... did the NFL profit millions more off that outcome (Vegas or not) than any other outcome?

I think some people just take things too far. 99% of what you're seeing on the field is legit.

Here's an interesting theory; The NFL wanted KC to lose so they could potentially see a Mahomes/Herbert matchup in the first round and have Mahomes on the field for potentially 3 playoff games instead of 2. Is that really so far fetched? I really don't think it is.

The Titans getting a bye week will allow more time for Henry to come back and will be two weeks of anticipation generating huge excitement to see an otherwise pretty boring team play. It’s the NFL playoffs so all games are a draw but a Titans team in round one without Henry or a weak Henry would be nothing like the draw of seeing him in the divisional. The Texans probably wouldn’t win regardless but should it be close the Titans will get some very favorable calls.

Are you following the money or are you following the ratings?

I think that's the first question you should determine, and then stick to that thesis.

So you believe the NFL tells the referees to make it easier for certain teams to win each week?

So the NFL is in on it, the referees are in on it, but no one else? The owners don't know about this?

The Vegas vs Ratings debate seems to be one that skeptics can't agree with each other on, or even agree with themselves on.
You understand that there can be a middle ground here.

I guess I wonder how many of us were waiting for those 4th down flags to come out. Seemed like there was a pattern.

The question we should be asking is, with all the complaints about officiating, why is nothing done about it? I think most believe it could easily be fixed by making rules simpler or hire more officials to watch each specific area of the game. So why doesn't the NFL fix it? It's probably like the pass interference challenge year. They don't want to. So again...why not?

Is poor officiating eating at the NFL's bottom line in any conceivable way? Because, if not, why should the NFL care? You couldn't even get the NFL to care about concussions (a well known issue) until the issue started hitting at potential profits. .

If mass boycotts due to officiating started happening, I guarantee you the NFL would act. Just look at how quick the NFL acted after the Fail Mary.

Dude, if the NFL can steer the Super Bowl to Tom Brady vs. the Patriots, they will do whatever they can to make it happen.
